Wales head to Amsterdam to tackle Denmark in their Euro 2020 last 16 match up on Saturday evening at 5pm. They’re likely to face a partisan crowd, with Denmark supporters heading to the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Wales will have to get the job done without their fans as travel bans will prevent many from crossing the Channel. While the external factors are tilted in Denmark’s favour, what do the numbers say? Here’s a Bet Builder using our pal Andy Robson’s cheat sheet.
Saturday 5pm: Wales v Denmark BBC One and BBC iPlayer
Gareth Bale has managed two shots on target from six efforts at Euro 2020 and that record should realistically be even better for a player of his quality. He skied a penalty against Turkey and then spurned a volley to equalise against Italy. Thankfully neither miss came back to haunt him but he is showing that he’s getting in the right areas and should be more than capable of adding to his tally against Denmark. Gareth Bale to Have 1 or More Shots on Target kicks us off here.
No Danish player has managed more strikes on goal than Atalanta’s marauding wing-back Joakim Maehle and only three players in the entire tournament have hit the target more often than him. He’s had 4 shots on target from seven and it’s no coincidence. He’s given a lot of freedom to attack down the Denmark left, as he is for his club side, and is key to the way his side set-up both going forward and defensively. Expect Joakim Maehle To have 1 or More Shots on Target.
He’s only played 142 minutes at Euro 2020 but Sampdoria’s Mikkel Damsgaard has made a big splash, with the 20-year-old bringing some much needed pace and youthful exuberance to the Denmark front three. He scored a banger against Russia last time out and is a constant threat thanks to his pace and directness. He’ll be running at a stubborn, yet not the most mobile, Wales defence and he’s more than happy to try his luck from range and we could see Mikkel Damsgaard To have 1 or More Shots on Target again here.
Saturday’s referee is German official Daniel Siebert. He’s dishing out an average of 3.38 yellow cards per game, and Thomas Delaney looks a strong candidate to get one in this last 16 tie. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder has committed more fouls than any other Danish player with an average of 2.25 per game.
With Wales likely to play on the counter-attack and Aaron Ramsey breaking forward through the middle of the park, Delaney could be forced to stop him by any means necessary.
