League One concludes on Sunday at midday and while much is already sorted out, there’s still plenty to play for in the playoff race. Portsmouth currently hold 6th spot and have a slender one-point lead over Oxford in 7th and Charlton in 8th.
Portsmouth’s must-win clash with Accrington Stanley has been covered here so we’ll take a look at the other two top-six contenders’ final games as they attempt to overhaul the south coast club. If Pompey win it’s curtains for Oxford and Charlton, but if they slip up who will be most likely to ghost in and steal their playoff berth?
Well, Charlton have a very tricky challenge as League One champions Hull head to The Valley and Oxford will fancy their chances at home to Burton. I’ve managed to find a really, really big value double that I like the look of for the final round of games in League One on Sunday. So, let’s get into it.
Charlton v Hull – Hull to Win and Both Teams To Score
Charlton have done well to still be in with a chance of making it into the playoffs but their goal difference is going to make it hard for them. And that’s where I think we can really milk the value in this game.
Hull have won the league at a relative canter and will want to bow out on a high. They’re obviously in good form and have won 11 of their last 14 games. The price on offer for them to win this game is scandalously good and it seems Paddy’s traders think Hull are already on the beach.
I have my doubts about that assumption. The Addicks are hard to beat and have only lost once in the last 14 themselves, but the defeat came to the only team able to hold a candle to Hull this season, Peterborough.
Charlton have to chase this game and I think that’s going to play right into The Tigers’ hands…. claws… paws? Anyway, Grant McCann’s men like to put on a show and there have been 18 goals in their last five games.
Charlton have been involved in 17 goals but I think their desperation to pull a rabbit out of the hat will be their downfall against the best team in the league. I think Hull will win with Both Teams Scoring in this one. Both teams have scored in seven of these two’s last 10 combined and this is a bet at big odds that has a great chance.
Oxford v Burton – Oxford to Win and Both Teams To Score
We’re looking for goals here as well as Oxford have, I think, the best chance of pipping Pompey should they slip up. If Portsmouth were to lose and Oxford draw then The U’s would topple them on goal difference.
If Portsmouth draw and Oxford win then Karl Robinson’s side go above them by a point. A Fratton Park faux-pas is not completely beyond the realms of possibility given Pompey’s propensity for self-implosion and overall poor home form.
But I think Oxford will beat 16th-placed Burton in this game and again we’re adding some extra value with Both Teams to Score. BTTS has landed in four of Burton’s last five as well as five out of five for Oxford.
That’s the Both Teams to Score element in the bag, but what about the result? Well, on paper, this is a foregone conclusion as well. Oxford have won five of their last six games to supercharge their unlikely playoff push.
Burton have won twice over the same period, drawing three and losing one. They haven’t had a tough run though. At super value I really like the chances of Oxford to Win and Both Teams To Score to give The U’s real hope of sneaking into the top six. All eyes on Fratton Park then.
