Sheffield Wednesday continue to search for a new manager, having sacked Tony Pulis last month after just 10 matches in charge. The Welshman will want to forget his brief stay at Hillsborough, during which he oversaw five defeats, four draws and a solitary win against Coventry.
Next Chelsea manager odds: Who could replace Lampard as he feels the heat?
Pulis was given the boot with Wednesday second-bottom in the Championship, and the 62-year-old’s temporary replacement Neil Thompson has since steered the Owls to consecutive victories over Middlesbrough and Derby County as well as a win over Exeter in the FA Cup.
That has lifted the club up to 21st in the table as they continue to fight back after being handed a 12-point deduction – later halved on appeal – for breaking EFL spending rules. With 2021 well underway, Wednesday have now begun the hunt for their third permanent manager of the season in earnest.
Unsurprisingly, caretaker coach Thompson is among the frontrunners to get the nod after our trader’s priced up who could be next for the Owls, after immediately triggering a response from his players following Pulis’ departure.
But the 57-year-old has ex-Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook for company in the market. The Liverpudlian has been out of work since leaving the DW Stadium last summer and was heavily linked with Wednesday before Pulis’ appointment.

Roy Keane is being linked with a number of roles at the moment including Celtic and the Republic of Ireland job. Another former Ireland boss, Mick McCarthy – recently sacked by Cypriot side APOEL – could also get a look in for the job at Hillsborough.
However, chairman Dejphon Chansiri has plenty of other options – including former QPR, Newcastle and Man City midfielder, and Joey Barton. The 38-year-old, who hung up his boots in 2018 to take charge of League One outfit Fleetwood Town, was sacked by The Trawlermen recently and is one of the most high-profile candidates available for the Owls.
Phil Thompson: Steven Gerrard is obvious successor at Liverpool
However, Sheffield Wednesday would represent a step up for Barton in what would only be his second managerial posting and the former midfielder is undoubtedly considered a risky appointment by sections of the fanbase.
Danny Cowley is still out of work after leaving Huddersfield in July, and seems to have been linked with every possible vacancy since.
Chris Coleman, Rene Weiler and Darren Moore complete our shortlist of possible contenders while punters can get a longer price on the likes of Mark Bowen, Nigel Pearson, Ryan Lowe, Carlos Carvalhal and even Patrick Vieira.
