Everton Football Club. The undulations associated with both their performance levels and expectations throughout the years would unsettle even the biggest cynic.
But for once, they seem good enough to challenge. If not for actual domestic honours in the league, then certainly for their first trophy in far too long.
With the home Carabao Cup tie landed against, admittedly, an improving Man United side – is this their best shot in years to finally get the monkey off the back? Not to undermine them at all, but this could well be their cup final of sorts.
Wednesday 8pm: Everton v Man Utd

Unfortunately for them, their rise has come at roughly the same time that Manchester United have appeared semi-functional since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. Both of these sides attack at pace and it should be relatively frenetic, too.
United don’t necessarily need to win this game to have it compensate for any shortcomings this season, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s mantra is trophies above all – as was the way in his time at the club as a player.
This honestly might be the only game in the League Cup I’ve ever looked forward to more than any matchup played in the Premier League. Here’s a Bet Builder for you to add to the tension.
Everton to Qualify
I can smell a robbery in this game, and it’ll go down as one of the more memorable nights in the history of Goodison Park if Everton Qualify. Not that they’ve had too many in recent years, and the severe lack of a partisan crowd to inspire it could see it lost in the annals of time, but you know what I’m getting at.
United will throw absolutely everything at this Everton unit because they’ve got the guile in the final third, but I suspect the cuteness of both Ancelotti and the likes of Richarlison just know how to play an occasion better. One of the greater robberies of our time is about to take place, and as the kids might say – I am here for it.
Over 3.5 Goals
Neither of these two sides possess midfielders when they’re in full flight and that’s the way the best teams should operate; not like the ones who watched every Barcelona training session between 2006 and 2014. Ironically, if you combined the best elements of these two, you’d probably get something similar to what Liverpool have.
And that’s exactly what this game will look like – two Liverpool reserve teams playing each other as Over 3.5 Goals fly in.
Man United to Have 5 or More Shots on Target
They will absolutely batter Everton if the Toffees try to keep the ball, which I suspect they will. United very rarely shoot from distance. They’re beginning to carve out clear-cut opportunities with top-end movement off the ball and raw pace.
They don’t waste opportunities to find the target, and Man Utd are comfortably one of the safer bets when it comes to this to Have 5 or More Shots on Target market as their strikers are maturing and Bruno Fernandes continues to be my leading Player of the Year contender.
Bruno Fernandes to Have 3 or More Shots
Speaking of the man – nobody is more central to finding those spaces than the Portuguese do-it-all. He understands the game and opposing formations as well as Kevin De Bruyne and while those comparisons might not be forthcoming just yet, I’m happy to be the first if needs be.
Having him on free kicks doesn’t hurt either, especially as Everton frequently get overloaded in the middle of the pitch so expect Bruno Fernandes to Have 3 or More Shots.
