If we had to find redemption in an international break, it’s probably the fact that we’ve got football on a Thursday night. And hang on there now folks, don’t be coming for me with your ‘We love the Europa League’ nonsense – I’m not an Arsenal fan, therefore haven’t had to force myself to like mediocre competitions in quite some time.
But moving on – following what I can only presume will be a harrowing defeat for the Irish in Faro at the hands of Portugal, my appetite for international football now matches my desire to obtain a second passport.

If anything, Thursday night’s games are of more interest and while England go on their merry crusade around Europe, beating teams left, right and centre in order to build the hype machine which ultimately stops them from ever actually achieving, we get to sit back in the knowledge that we never have to take those games seriously for that very reason.

Hungary v England
TV: ITV and ITV Hub
Budapest – the scene of some of the more epic Euro 2020 clashes in Group F and a few knockout games. Not that England will remember that tournament with anything other than remorse at this point. Hungary is one of those places where I almost always pencil in a goal for the hosts just due to the hostile nature of the home fans – which we saw time and time again in the summer.
But this isn’t merely an atmospheric thumbs up. Hungary have taken points from France and Germany in their last two competitive internationals – they’re no joke. England come into this tie with a sense of games really not mattering a considerable amount after the summer, but even a semi-interested England team are good enough to knock a couple in here.

Iceland v Romania
TV: Sky Sports Red Button
Two glorious places to visit if you’re ever in the mood. But probably not for football reasons. Iceland have been on a downward curve since they beat a big nation in a major tournament not that long ago. I can’t remember who, though – anyone?
I wouldn’t quite call it a resurgence in the short-term, but knocking in strikes against Mexico and Poland indicate that they’re semi-functional once more, even if they’re going in a completely different direction since.
Romania are reliable. The last side they failed to score against that wasn’t considerably better than them was Sweden back in November 2019. These two also played out a qualifier only a year ago, with both teams scoring in that one, too.
Lithuania v Northern Ireland
TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football
If you haven’t been here before, all I can say is their economy is in bits, their football is getting worse by the day and th.. Oh sorry, this game is in Lithuania.
And I am aware that neither of these sides have scored a goal yet in their combined four games, but they’re both now very much aware that points won’t do them any good and I expect them both to try and attack – to hilarious end results.

Sweden v Spain
TV: Sky Sports Premier League
Far be it from me to suggest a game that was contested where one side had about 85% possession in the Euros and finished scoreless is going to be a cracker, but I do anticipate Spain having one of their more ill-disciplined showings here.
There’s a lot of resentment and bad blood now existing between these two – largely because Spain were embarrassed and Alvaro Morata will be out to redeem himself. But when Spain are loose, they’re generally exposed at the back, and this new group of Swedes infusing the oldest squad at the Euros with some youthful promise can grab a goal too.
