Exclusive – Man City Netflix doc director explains decision to omit 115 FFP charges

Forget the interesting stuff, tell me more about Stefan Ortega's stamp collection...

The director behind Manchester City’s new Netflix documentary has explained his decision to omit any mention of the 115 Financial Fair Play charges brought against the club.

Together: Treble Winners is a new six-part series documenting the club’s 2022-23 campaign, when they became the first English club to buy the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.

Filmmaker Stefan Spielbegiristain chose to ignore the fact that City could be stripped of their historic Treble and demoted to the Vanarama National League North to focus on more important issues such as Bernardo Silva’s dog and Kevin De Bruyne’s fashion sense.

Spielbegiristain, the man behind documentaries such as ‘Was Lee Harvey Oswald a Russian Style Icon?’ and ‘Lance Armstrong’s Top 5 UFO Encounters’, told Paddy Power News:

‘Sure, I could have devoted a few minutes to one of the biggest financial scandals in football history but then we would never have witnessed Scott Carson wrestling Ilkay Gundogan WWE-style’.

‘If you were a City fan, would you rather know what contingency plans the club has in place should they lose their Premier League status, or why Benardo Silva called his French bulldog John?’

‘Pssst – ‘spoiler alert’ –  he named it after John Stones. Weird, huh? I never saw that bromance coming’.

Spielbegiristain also neglected to address Joao Cancelo’s contentious exit from the squad last January to join Bayern Munich on loan, instead focusing on Erling Haaland’s favourite bonsai tree.

The Portuguese, currently playing his trade with Spanish FFP favourites Barcelona, was a key player for City before his acrimonious departure from the Etihad.

‘Some fans might ask, why one of the best right backs in the world was allowed to leave the club mid-season despite continually denying he ever had a row with Pep?

‘I’m like, who cares? Here’s a 7-foot Norwegian bloke pruning a little tree instead’.
