When is the Europa League knockout round play-off draw? Date, time, teams and format

16 teams... only eight can progress!

Jose Mourinho

The Europa League knockout round play-off is a bit like a Bounty in a tub of Celebrations – nobody really wants it but it’s better than nothing.

The eight teams that finished in third place in the Champions League groups drop into the competition and they face the sides that placed second in the Europa League groups in order to progress to the last 16 of the competition.

UEFA’s decision to implement this round adds spice to the Europa League group stage as the winners sail straight through to the last 16, without needing to take in the extra two matches of the play-off.
