The Auld Enemies go head-to-head on Friday and with England red-hot favourites we’ve heard unconfirmed reports from within the Three Lions’ training camp that the players are ready to re-enact one of English football’s most iconic goal celebrations when they find the back of the net at Wembley in Friday’s showdown.
The infamous “Dentist’s Chair” celebration from Euro 96 is set to get a 21st century makeover, with England players taking time out at training to try to copy Paul Gascoigne’s moment of inspiration from the two sides’ famous Wembley meeting 25 years ago.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Skipper Harry Kane has been strategically placing bottles of water behind the goals at St George’s Park in anticipation of getting off the mark against a Scottish side left reeling after Monday’s 2-0 defeat to the Czech Republic at Hampden Park
According to our sources, the England striker is so keen to celebrate in style against the Tartan Army that he has had a “lazy-boy” chair put in his room so the rest of the lads can practice their Gazza homage – just like their England predecessors did on that controversial night out in Hong Kong all those years ago.
Much to the relief of Gareth Southgate, the lads are understood to be sticking to water rather than using the traditional tequila method and have agreed to be tucked up in bed by the time the gaffer arrives to read them their bedtime stories.
Many of England’s current squad were not even born when Gazza opened up his gullet on that baking Wembley afternoon and are eager to come up with their own unique goal celebrations should they score against the Scots.
Jack Grealish, because of his Birmingham roots, is believed to be keen to recreate a scene from the hit TV show Peaky Blinders, but having watched all five seasons over the past 48 hours, his manager has stated that keeping razor blades tucked in socks sends out the wrong signals in a fixture that will be highly charged anyway.
Marcus Rashford was reportedly caught body popping in the players quarters earlier this week having seen a re-run of Peter Crouch’s robotic recital after scoring the winning goal against Trinidad and Tobago in the 2006 World Cup, while left-back Kieren Trippier was spotted walking around the car-park veins pumping in tribute to Stuart “Psycho” Pearce after he’d scored a penalty in the quarter-final shoot-out v Spain at Euro 96.
And we understand that Southgate has been showing the squad old clips of some of England’s greatest moments in major tournaments – running time approx 10 mins – to try to create a “winning vibe” in the camp and one goal celebration caught the eye.
David Platt’s “pile on” after his last gasp winner against Belgium has inspired the team, who chatted to former England striker Gary Lineker after Sunday’s 1-0 win against Croatia. However, as one those involved in the wild scenes following that goal, the MOTD presenter advised against it, claiming the only reason that “Platty” wasn’t seriously injured in the ensuing melee was because he “farted in Terry Butcher’s mush” causing the man-mountain to pass out before he could land on the pile.
And, having watched YouTube videos of the time that Scottish fans ran riot at Wembley in 1977 by ripping up the pitch and breaking the crossbars, some of the less experienced England players in Southgate’s 26-man squad were apparently keen to recreate the scene on Friday should England win.
However, senior FA figures immediately put the kybosh on this claiming that UEFA had already had to fork out for a new goal and netting at Hampden following Scottish keeper David Marshall’s unsuccessful attempt to save Patrik Schick’s wonder goal in Monday’s loss to the Czechs and would not be willing to replace another set of goals so soon.
