Next England manger: Odds on Gareth Southgate to leave tumble after troublesome week

It's all gone South for Gareth rather quickly.

With troublesome players off the field and a lack of ambition on it, Paddy thinks England boss Gareth Southgate’s time as manager could be over before the end of this year.

We make it 3/1 that Southgate is out of a job before the new year and think it’s even more unlikely that he’ll still be in the England hotseat by the end of 2021 (6/4).

And, with players showing more creativity in smuggling girls into hotels than they are on the pitch, bookies make it 7/1 for another player to be dropped from the next England squad due to behavioural issues.

But who will take over from the man who was untouchable just a few days ago? Well, it’s pretty grim reading if you’re an England fan.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche is the current favourite to replace Southgate – a move that would, at least, prove popular with current England fullback, Kieran Trippier, who once labelled the Burnley manager the ‘ginger Mourinho’.

Next up in the betting are Brighton’s Graham Potter and Eddie Howe who left Bournemouth after guiding them back into the Championship last season.

England legends Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are at Chelsea and Rangers respectively and are just getting their managerial careers up and running. Here’s an idea; maybe they could do the job together? Although, perhaps their styles would be too similar to be effective as a world-class duo?

Punters can also back a continental touch in the form of Arsenal legend/pariah Arsène Wenger, who is ahead of Brendan Rodgers and TV star José Mourinho.

Spokesman Paddy Power said: “Let’s be honest, England players have been far more entertaining off the pitch than they have on it of late, and that puts pressure on Gareth Southgate.

“With boring performances and players acting up, we’re seeing bets on his replacement – unless he can drum up some fighting spirit from somewhere.”
