MLB World Series, Game 5, Texas Rangers @ Arizona Diamondbacks
Thursday 12:03am, Chase Field, Phoenix, AZ
TV: TNT Sports
Here we sit, with the Texas Rangers being just a single game away from clinching a World Series for the first time.
Their story is one of turmoil, sure – but having not come through despite winning back-to-back American League pennants at the start of the last decade, another failure in 2023 would probably extend a psychological burden; the likes of which we see destroy franchises in other sports.
So to do it from 3-1 up, with your two game homestand to finish the series and another game before then – well, let’s not even tempt fate.
The Diamondbacks were the biggest surprise coming into this series, and that much has likely transpired now, but with the efforts from Ketel Marte and Christian Walker in particular, it feels like pitching has been their downfall.
Yes, Zac Gallen has been a Cy Young-level player this year, while Merrill Kelly eats innings. But really only Paul Sewald and Kevin Ginkel carry their bullpen deep.
Whereas for the Rangers, while their ups and downs this year through Jacob deGrom and Aroldis Chapman have been troubling, both Max Scherzer and Nathan Eovaldi’s returns from injury have seen them patch through. It seems fitting, then, that we get Eovaldi versus Gallen to keep this thing alive.
Rangers to Win
They’ve won ten in-a-row on the road in the postseason, so it seems fitting that they latch onto a startling eleven-game run to seal it.
You can easily make the case that both of these teams have batted well throughout the series. Nobody can suggest otherwise, but the Rangers are hitting with runners in scoring position while the Diamondbacks are leaving countless runners stranded.
If it were a situation where Arizona weren’t hitting well, you could put it down to technique. You then have a hitting meeting and iron some stuff out. But their Diamondbacks have scored 22 runs in these four games, which is one more than the Rangers have.
One team has prevailed in the big moment and the other hasn’t.

First Inning Result & Second Inning Result: Tie
I can put these two in together to just suggest that Gallen in particular doesn’t get hit often in the early stages. Yes, Evan Carter and Adolis Garcia got to Eovaldi in Game 1, but he was pitching particularly well in those outings.
With the Rangers likely to take a slightly different approach in the desert, I think both will get through the opening pair of innings relatively unscathed.
Under 8.5 Runs
Is there a chance that these two pitchers have their good work undone by exhausted bullpens given yesterday’s efforts?
Well, Eovaldi worked at least six innings in all but the opener of this World Series, and has retired nineteen batters on three separate occasions so I don’t expect it to be a huge issue for Texas.
There was a bit more forethought gone into Arizona’s bullpen given they had always pencilled Gallen in for Game 5, with Game 4 being a reliever-based experiment, so they should be fine in this instance.
Clinchers are always tight regardless because both teams know that every hit can seal their fate one way or the other. Expect conservative base-running and chasing outside the zone in this.
