Tennis Tips: Tipman’s best bets for Australian Open day 2 includes a 5/1 acca

It's Day 2 of the Australian Open and Tipman's tennis tipster has found a few punts worth your time.

Australian Open, 1-23

Grigor Dimitrov v Aslan Karatsev

Both players to Win a Set, Tuesday 1am

World number 29 Dimitrov faces Russian Karatsev, currently ranked number 52, in Round 1 of the Australian Open. They have faced each other 2 times, both last year with both players winning 1 each and both winning a set in those games. Both head into the open in inconsistent form and will be looking to progress here. Dimitrov will be seeking revenge here against Karatsev, knocking him out of the Australian open fairly convincingly 2 years ago. This should be a close game that could go either way and both should score at least 1 set.

Garbine Muguruza v Elise Mertens

Over 22.5 Total Games, Tuesday 1am

Muguruza former world number 1 and ranked in the top 3 this time last year, has plummeted in the rankings but she is still a class act and has a good chance against the Belgian Elise Mertens here. Muguruza has a perfect 10-0 record in the first round of the Australian Open and will be looking to extend that to 11-0 here against an opponent she has beaten both times they have met, most recently 6-4 7-6 in March 2021. Mertens herself has a good record and has never lost in the first two rounds of this tournament. The 2-0 win for Muguruza ended on 23 games and the only other meeting finished 21 and sailed over the target here. It should be a close game, both have been in better form but both have formidable records at this stage of the tournament and neither will want to relinquish that.

Katie Volynets v Evgeniya Rodina

Katie Volynets to Win, Tuesday 2:30am

Volynets comes into this match having won 6 of her last 7 matches at the Australian Open. Despite some apparent struggles in the qualification for this year’s tournament, I believe she is too strong for an aging Rodina who has lost the 2nd set in 13 of her last 15 matches. Even if Rodina takes the first set, Volynets has the fitness and firepower to win it in 3, if not before.

Max Purcell v Emil Ruusuvouri

Emil Ruusuvouri -4.5 Match Handicap, Tuesday 3am

Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori looks set for a smooth passage to round 2 after being drawn against 204 seed Max Purcell and although Purcell has home soil advantage it’s difficult to think that will be enough here. The two have met once before with Ruusuvuori winning 6-1 & 6-2 in dominant fashion. Although the world number 46 hasn’t been at his best leading up to this he has history here and was beaten here last year by the eventual winner Rafa Nadal. Obviously Purcell will put up a fight but I just think class will shine through and Ruusuvuori should win by at least 5 games in the end.

Jan-Lennard Struff v Tommy Paul

Tommy Paul to Win, Tuesday 4am

Tommy Paul (USA #35) has a favourable opener here against Jan-Lennard Struff (Ger #167) and will be expected to advance. The players faced eachother twice last year with Tommy Paul winning in straight sets on both occasions. Struff does come into the Open in good form winning 7 of his last 8 whilst Tommy Paul has had a fairly inconsistent season, hence the value here in what looks to be a predictable outcome given the head-to-heads and the world rankings.

Tommy Paul, 1-23

John Isner v Adrian Mannarino

John Isner to Win, Tuesday 4:30am

World number 42 meets world number 43 here in what looks like a very close match up, but if history is anything to go by then the American John Isner holds all the aces here. They have met 8 times in their careers and Isner has won every single time, majority being 2-0. Mannarino is not in good shape at the moment with just the 1 win from his last 7 matches while Isner not in sparkling form himself still has been in better form. It could just be a case where Isner has his number and the contrast in styles don’t work out well for the French world number 43.

Lucia Bronzetti v Laura Siegemund

Lucia Bronzetti to Win, Tueday 4:30am

Bronzetti has had a mediocre start to the year in singles, but has played solid and reliable tennis at the right times to win important matches. On the flip side, Siegemund has lost 7 of her last 8 matches and comes into this looking for somewhat of a revival to previous form. Based on the tennis being played by both so far this year, I find it hard to look past Bronzetti winning, and the odds are somewhat favourable too. Bronzetti to win.
