Tennis Tips: Tipman’s best bets for Australian Open day 1 include an 11/2 acca

The first day of action starts in Melbourne on Sunday night UK time and our friends at Tipman have found a few fancies worth your attention

Yibing Wu vs Corentin Moutet

Yibing Wu to win the match

Yibing Wu has improved his game a lot lately and should be confident of getting the win here. These two met at the US Open last year in a match in which Wu won 2-0. There’s not a huge amount separating the two but Wu is the more accurate player. Fitness could be an issue but both players have the same issue in that respect so we’re taking Wu to win this one.

Brandon Nakashima v Mackenzie McDonald

Over 38.5 games

Two Americans meet here in round one, Nakashima’s the world number 47 and McDonald world number 63 so they’re both very evenly matched. They have faced each other twice previous with both players taking a win each. Two very big hitting servers who should provide a close match as both look to dominate their own service games. We should see a long game between these two in an entertaining round 1 match up.

Rafael Nadal v Jack Draper

Jack Draper +4.5 match handicap (games)

Defending champion Rafa Nadal comes here aiming to defend his title but has really been out of sorts lately and has only won once in his last seven hard court games.

Draper has played seven times already this year and won five of those matches, he’s beaten some decent players so far and although this is undoubtedly his biggest test of the season I can see this remaining a close game and Draper could definitely pull out a surprise.

Kyle Edmund v Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner to win 3-0

Italy’s world number 16 Sinner will be very happy with his draw facing the low ranked Brit Kyle Edmund. These two met just 12 days ago at Adelaide with the winner winning in straight sets 6-3 and 6-2. The difference in class was evident then and with such a quick turnaround it’s very hard to see any changes or improvement from the underdog to avoid another lesson from the talented Italian. This should be a straight forward straight sets victory.

Cameron Norrie v Luca Van Assche

Cameron Norrie to win 3-0

Cameron Norrie Britain’s top male player who was also a finalist in Auckland when beaten by Richard Gasquet in a match we probably felt he should have won but it doesn’t change the fact he comes here in very good form. I fancy him to make a good run in this competition and will be more than pleased with his round 1 draw against world number 142 Luca Van Assche. The French youngster is far less experienced and I fancy that will count for a lot as the Brit goes through in straight set fashion.

Maria Sakkari

Yue Yuan v Maria Sakkari

Maria Sakkari to win 2-0

Women’s world number 6 Maria Sakkari kicks off her tournament against China’s 119th ranked Yue Yuan. Sakkari has been in the top six for the last two years producing some really consistent tennis and has had some good runs in Grand Slams as well. Yue Yuan lost both prep matches leading up to this tournament and Sakkari should have no problems dispatching her in straight sets here.

Xinyu Wang v Storm Hunter

Xinyu Wang to win the match

Xinyu Wang and Storm Hunter met in March last year with Xin winning in straight sets with relative ease 6-2 and 6-4. She has a much better record on hard surfaces while Storm Hunter has proved very inconsistent as the world ranking shows with her being ranked 227 while Wang is ranked 89. This may not be as straightforward as the previous encounter and Hunter is on home soil but I think the quality will tell eventually and Wang should progress.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

Panna Udvardy v Camila Osorio

Total games over 21.5

World number 90 and world number 82 meet here in the first round in what is anticipated to be a very close game. The two met in 2021 with Colombian Osorio edging out the win 2-1 through 27 games. Little to choose between the two coming into this and it could quite easily be another 3 set game. Market for over 21.5 looks good value given these two are so closely matched.
