Ons Jabeur V Sofia Kenin: Kenin to win the match and both players win a set
Revenge will be on the mind of Ons Jabeur as she takes on Australian Open champ Sofia Kenin in Round 3 on Saturday.
Kenin dumped Jabeur out of the Aussie Open at the Quarter Final stage earlier this year, but the Tunisian has been in fine post lockdown form, reaching the last eight of both the WTA Cincinnati and Lexington in recent weeks and she’s yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows.
Sofia Kenin was in scintillating form pre-COVID, claiming her first Slam in style, but she’s been slow out the gates since the restart, falling in the first round in Cincinnati.
Kenin’s aggression and power against Jabeur’s guile should make for a great contest. I expect the American to have too much for the in-form Jabeur, so Kenin wins the match and both players win a set is the bet here.
Maria Sakkari V Amanda Anisimova: Sakkari to win 2-1
Both players are looking to make Round 4 at the US Open for the first time, but it hasn’t been an easy road thus far for either player.
15th seed Maria Sakkari has had to go to three sets in both of her opening matches, but the Greek comes into the tournament in superb form, reaching the Quarter Finals in Cincinnati, knocking out the GOAT Serena Williams along the way.
Reaching the fourth round at the Aussie Open earlier this year was a career-best at a slam for Sakkari, and she’ll be hoping to replicate that form here against her talented young opponent.
Anisimova had a great 2019, reaching the French Open semi-finals, and is no doubt a future star, but the young American struggled through her 2nd round against Wildcard Katrina Scott and was dumped out in Round 2 of Cincinnati 2 weeks ago.
This will be a tight one no question, but I back Sakkari to edge the hometown girl 2-1.
Frances Tiafoe V Marton Fucsovics: Tiafoe to win the match and both players to win a set
Marton Fucsovics comes into this one favourite after a 5 set thriller against 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov. A great result on paper, but Dimitrov’s form coming into the Open has been dire, losing six of his previous eight matches, and contracting COVID-19 along the way for good measure.
Nonetheless the Hungarian Fucsovics is confident, and will see this as the perfect opportunity to equal his previous best at a Slam and get into the 4th Round.
Frances Tiafoe battled through a five-set slugfest himself to claim a deserved victory over the resilient Aussie John Millman in the 2nd Round on Thursday.
The explosive American will be hoping to emulate the form that got him to the Quarter Finals of the Australian Open in 2019, but he faces a stern test in Fucsovics. I think the big serving American has a great chance here coming in as the underdog. It will be close, but I have Frances Tiafoe to win the match and both players to win a set.
