Denis Shapovalov v Taylor Fritz: Shapovalov to win and both players win a set
Canada’s Denis Shapovalov needed three hours and 42 minutes to defeat Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the US Open on Wednesday.
Playing aggressively against the Korean, Shapovalov hit 62 winners and 20 aces against the Kwon’s 19 in the match indicating that he will certainly be coming into the match in fine form.
Elsewhere No. 19 seed Taylor Fritz stormed into the third round after beating former World No. 6 Gilles Simon 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 in a two-hour contest on Wednesday, hitting 16 aces and 43 winners against the 35-year-old Frenchman.
The 2015 US Open boys’ singles champion, Fritz, is in the third round of a Grand Slam for the fourth time and will be determined to make a fourth-round debut this year.
It’s tough to call this match-up, but Shapovalov will come in with a slight mental edge, having won both their previous contests and could well make it 3-0 with another four-plus set win in the tournament, making Denis Shapovalov to win the match and both players win a set a solid pick.
Shelby Rogers v Madison Brengle: Rogers to win 2-1
Friday’s all-American third-round ladies match up pitches Shelby Rogers and Madison Brengle up against each other in rare opportunity to advance to the fourth round of a slam for both players.
In summary, this is a classic match-up of attack vs defence pitting Shelby Rogers’ attacking prowess against the robust defensive ability of Madison Brengle.
While Brengle excels at keeping the ball in play due to her flexibility and court-positioning, Rogers possesses a greater variety of shots in her arsenal.
Brengle’s serve is at a decent level but is unlikely to trouble Rogers much with the same to be said for the opposite relating to Brengle’s attacking play.
Both women are decent returners, particularly on the backhand, but Brengle will face difficulties in dealing with Rogers’ groundstrokes and the latter’s attacking quality might just clinch this tie in her favour making Shelby Rogers to win 2-1 nice value.
Jordan Thompson v Mikhail Kukushkin: Over 37.5 match games
Mikhail Kukushkin and Jordan Thompson will face off in the third round of the 2020 US Open with both players having had a tough run in the tournament so far, each averaging four sets a match.
Kukushkin came through in 5 vs 13th seed Cristian Garin winning 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 7-5 while favourite Jordan Thompson disposed of unseeded Egor Gerasimov 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in his second-round match.
Both players have previously met once before in the first round of the 2017 Miami Masters with Thompson retiring in the third set due to injury.
Both players are solid returners while Thompson will likely rely on his powerful serve suggesting Over 37.5 match games is likely to be good value.
All three of these selections in a treble will give you odds of around 14/1 with Paddy Power.
