As Britain enters negotiations with the EU, Brexit chief David Davis may soon find himself leading something else – the country.
Paddy Power have installed him as the new favourite to succeed Theresa May as Prime Minister at 11/4 after a flood of money overnight.
Boasting a role front and centre for one of the UK’s most historic political events, Davis has attracted a series of bets this week after being out at 4/1 on Monday, and has leapfrogged Boris Johnson (7/2) and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn at 4/1 in the betting today.
Both have drifted dramatically overnight – having been joint-favourites at 2/1 yesterday evening – as punters back Davis for the top job.
Spokesperson Paddy Power said: “David Davis began Brexit negotiations in impressive fashion. OK, so handing over a mountaineering gift might seem a bit naff, but you’re missing the subtle message – he was telling the EU to take a hike.
“That’s clearly impressed our punters, who have been lumping on him over the last 24 hours – and not just because he’s in a strong position if May is forced out.”
