Miami Dolphins @ San Francisco 49ers – Handicap: San Francisco 49ers -4.5
The Miami Dolphins might be unbeaten since Tua Tagovailoa returned to the line-up in Week 7. That’s five wins on the spin punctuated by their bye-week and they’ve scored at least 30 point in the last four of them.
Yes, it’s fair to say the Miami offence is delivering on the promise of giving former Niners schemer Mike McDaniel the head coaching gig and trading for the most explosive receiver in the league in Tyreek Hill.
These performances mean the Dolphins now go to face McDaniels’ old team and mentor Kyle Shanhan with some big expectations to live up to.
Unfortunately, they do so with their starting right tackle out and left tackle, Terron Armstead, doubtful to play and likely to be limited even if he does. That could spell trouble for Tua despite the speed with which he gets rid of the ball.
The winning streak is also not as impressive when you look at the teams they’ve beaten on it, and the Niners defensive line will be licking their lips after seeing the injury report. We’ll take them to cover -4.5.
49ers Total Points: Over 25.5
The Niners offence was held to 13 points by the Saints last week, but still won. Elijah Mitchell was hurt, but that should mean a bigger role this week for Christian McCaffrey – not a bad replacement,
In their three games prior to the New Orleans struggle, they scored 38, 22 and 31 points, and Miami’s defence ranks among the most average of units across the league based on adjusted DVOA.
We’d expect San Francisco to put up a score on Sunday.
Kansas City Chiefs @ Cincinnati Bengals – Total Points: Over 52.5
These are two of the premier offences going head-to-head, so even though this is a high total, we think it can be passed comfortably on Sunday.
The Chiefs have coped remarkably with the departure of Tyreek Hill. Signing a selection of useful pieces in the offseason to add greater diversity to their offence in place of Hill’s explosive speed has seen them barely miss a step this season.
Pat Mahomes and Travis Kelce have remained the constant and the tight end shows no sign of stopping as he’s collected 12 scores this season and 912 years on 72 catches so far this season.
While the Bengals had a slower start to the season, in the last month or so they’ve really started to click on offence too. That’s all the more impressive because they’ve been without Ja’Marr Chase and Joe Mixon for much of that time.
They both could play this week, meaning they rejoin an offence that’s scored 30 or more points in five of the last six games – the exception coming against Tennessee’s stingy defence.
Joe Burrow and Pat Mahomes should serve up a shoot-out much like last season and over 52.5 Total Points is a reasonable expectation.
Anytime Touchdown: Marquez Valdes-Scantling
Not one of the flashier names on show, but MVS should have a shot at some big plays here.
He’s been a deep-threat throughout his NFL career and must figure in the Chiefs’ gameplan against a Cincy secondary without Chidobe Awuzie for the season and that gave up 281 yards through the air to the Titans a week ago.
He’s worth a play amid so many short-priced scorers in what should be a high-scoring game.
