A Plus Tard blew away his Cheltenham Gold Cup rivals at last week’s Festival as Rachael Blackmore became the first female jockey to win the Blue Riband.
Blackmore’s mount displayed a devastating turn of foot in the home straight and the success more than made up for the disappointment of picking the wrong horse last year when stablemate Minella Indo triumphed.
WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!
Speaking on the Cheltenham Festival 2022 Review episode of our From The Horse’s Mouth podcast, Ruby Walsh believes the County Tipperary native delivered the “perfect ride”.
But our resident jockey-turned pundit reckons the race was set up for A Plus Tard due to a lack of pace from the off. You can listen to the show in full BELOW.
Ruby Walsh:
“It was a perfect ride from Rachael Blackmore but the race was perfectly set up for her. It was well documented in the build up that there was a lack of pace and you had three horses that didn’t have a turn of foot that were the main market rivals outside of Protektorat. Minella Indo, Al Boum Photo and Galvin are dour stayers but there was nothing to make this a dour contest.
“As hard as Paul Townend and Robbie Power tried to force it on Al Boum Photo and Minella Indo, they’re just better horses when they’re being dragged rather than forced.
“I thought when Minella Indo pinged the third last and set sail that he was going to open up and go but you knew with how confident Rachael Blackmore was in the pocket behind that if she gets out on this horse then he’s obviously going to fly.
“He absolutely bolted in.
“He looked a better horse this year. He was brilliant at Haydock and with a different ride he’d have won at Christmas.
“He made amends and he was a runaway winner.”
