Cheltenham tips: Paddy Power’s best bets for day one at Cheltenham

Paddy was speaking on the latest episode of our From the Horse's Mouth podcast.

SUPREME NOVICES HURDLE 13:30 – FIDDLERONTHEROOF

I prefer Asterion Forlonge to Shishkin, but I actually think Fiddlerontheroof could be in with a sniff here.

I’ve heard Ruby Walsh say that jockey Robbie Power had said to him that the Irish novices aren’t as good as the English ones.

We’re very green tinted with our views on the novices here, so I think Fiddlerontheroof could have a chance and hopefully won’t mind the ground being on the soft side and offers a bit of value.

ARKLE 14.10 – ESPRIT DU LARGE

I wonder if Notebook can keep drifting and become a very backable price. Because the ground is softening, Fakir D’Oudaries has become quite sexy now.

But I’m again going to back the English horses. Brewin’upastorm I think has a decent chance and I think Esprit Du Large from the Evan Williams yard does too.

Esprit Du Large is a nice each/way price so I’ll go for him.

ULTIMA HANDICAP CHASE 14.50 – THE CONDITIONAL

I’m between Discorama and The Conditional. I think I’m going to end up leaning towards the latter. I’m trying to stop myself just backing Irish horses because that’s what I do every year and it never works.

Discorama has been second twice at the Festival so obviously loves the place and has a decent chance. But for David Bridgewater The Conditional has been his focus for Cheltenham this year and I think he might be well handicapped.

I’ll take a punt on him each/way.

MARE’S HURDLE 16.10 – BENIE DES DIEUX

I think Benie Des Dieux will win. In fact I’ve already backed her at odds-on. She’ll be well backed throughout the day tomorrow and will go off very short.

NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE 16.50 – ESPOIR DE GUYE

Espoir De Guye is very interesting because he’s gone up 14 pounds since last winning. It’s so progressive it might not be enough to stop it.

I also think Trainwreck for Henry de Bromhead is also in with a chance.

NATIONAL HUNT CHASE 17.30 – NEWTIDE

I think Carefully Selected is the most inappropriately named horse at the Festival. It’s the last race of the day, he’s going to be a really well-backed favourite. No one is going to be Carefully Selective about their favourite!

Newtide for trainer Kim Bailey looks a very useful prospect and the she thinks he’ll be a useful four-mile chaser, so she could present a problem for Carefully Selected and at 11/1 is a nice each/way price.
