This looks a gilt-edged opening for hurdling debutant ROMAN ROY who pushed a very smart horse close in his first bumper. He doesn’t appear to have a lot to beat, unless Goodwin Face can find improvement on his Warwick form when catching the attention of the stewards.
14:25 Ami Bondhu
The bumper exploits of AMI BONDHU and Touquet bode well in a novice hurdle of this nature. Nick Gifford’s runner edges preference. Realistic Optimism produced even higher figures in his Irish bumpers but has been a long-while absent.
14:55 Kankin
This looks sure to be run at a good clip and KANKIN can pick off his rivals late on, as was the case on his reappearance last season. Jack Doyen skipped an engagement on heavy ground Stratford on Saturday but can cope with give underfoot and he’s second choice ahead of Kalkas.
15:25 Birdman Bob (NAP)
A competitive handicap. BIRDMAN BOB (NAP) runs his best races here, has gone well fresh before and the booking of Sean Bowen looks a statement of intent. Saligo Bay is likely to run well with Freddie Mitchell taking away 5lb and others to bear in mind are Lady Caro and Invictus De Brion.
15:55 Icare Grandchamp
A tight race in which all five have chances. ICARE GRANDCHAMP won snugly at Newton Abbot and appeals as one with more to offer. Prince Quali ended last season on a high and, still only a 7yo, he too could have better days ahead of him.
16:25 River Gold
A chance is taken on RIVER GOLD. She never got going for Nicky Henderson but she was a good winner in France and, despite changing yards, her owners have kept the faith. Alto Alto is always to be feared around here and Davidoc can also feature if stripping fit enough after his break.
16:55 Hobbs Delight
Ballyrashane is preferred to River Tyne of the two last-time-out winners but HOBBS DELIGHT did well over hurdles and is bred to make a chaser.
17:30 Bella Cavalla
Unexposed as a stayer and arriving here after a good run in defeat, BELLA CAVALLA gets the nod ahead of Eliza Dolittle and Belles Benefit. O’Grady’s Hill was very underwhelming on her handicap debut but she’s lightly raced.
