Top pundit and all-round good guy Rory Delargy fancies Rubies Are Red to run a big race in the 16:30.

14:00 – New Charter

I’m with NEW CHARTER who shaped well on her debut at Newmarket. She was held up towards the back of the field, travelled strongly and ran on late behind Mountain Breeze, who already had racecourse experience. New Charter did well to chase her home.

That’s arguably the best form on offer and the question is ‘how much do you expect the horse to improve from one start to a second’? But there will be progress from New Charter on the back of that and she’s the one to beat.

14:35 – Autumn Festival (each-way)

I backed AUTUMN FESTIVAL at a massive price even thought he’s not the best-handicapped horse in the race. But he could get to the front and run a big race and while he was well beaten at Newbury last time, it was on much quicker ground. The softer the ground, the better for him.

He has an interesting jockey booking here in Benoit De La Sayatte. His record at Epsom is nine wins from 33, a 37 strike rate and you’d make a good profit backing those mounts blind. As a teenager, he was a big talent. Everyone wanted to use him when he claimed 5lb & 7lb. He doesn’t have that claim anymore, but he still is a talent, and he’s the kind of jockey I’d like to see on a front-runner around Epsom. I can see Autumn Festival bagging a place at a big price if Benoit lets him do his thing.

15:10 – Emily Upjohn

If EMILY UPJOHN arrives in the same form as last year, she will be hard to beat. However, she’s disappointed a couple of times in the past, including the in the King George at Ascot last year and on Champions Day the year before at the same venue. She’s a better horse in midsummer than in the late season and I’ll take the chance that she’ll do the business. I wouldn’t read too much into her run at Meydan last time, this track suits her better.

She was impressive at this venue when winning by a length and three-quarters last year against a better field than is assembled this year. If she comes down the hill well, she’ll be the one to beat.

15:45 – Killybegs Warrior (each-way)

KILLYBEGS WARRIOR could be let loose on the lead and be hard to peg back. He is drawn low in stall one which helps in a race like this – as will the soft ground. The Charlie Johnson-trained runner likes to front run so he could be the one to chase.

16:30 – Rubies Are Red

I quite like RUBIES ARE RED and I will go for her here now that the price has drifted and she might drift a little bit further with Wayne Lordon on board. But that won’t stop her.

Avoiding horses trained by Aidan O’Brien, just because they’re not ridden by the stable jockey at Epsom, would have cost you plenty of money down the years, plenty of big-price winners, including in this race. Rubies Are Red shaped tremendously well at Lingfield on ground which would have been too quick for her.

She has been very much waiting for this sort of trip and I think she will be at her best on the ground that we’re going to get now. There’s a fair bit of improvements in her, but there will need to be for her to win this Classic.

She’s got the right kind of profile of an Aidan O’Brien Oaks filly to me.
