16:15 Dramatic Star
Far from the most competitive Class 2 handicap ever staged and most have something to prove. Marhaba The Champ ran his best race of a light campaign last time, so has the distinction of being the only one to arrive off the back of a solid recent effort, but DRAMATIC STAR still has the potential to do better if the gelding operation has settled him down. Kolossal, who was picked up for a chunky 200,000euros from Germany last winter, is another to consider.
16:50 Marama
Although having to carry a penalty for last month’s impressive comeback win at Chester, the sex allowance means MARAMA has to concede only 2lb to the enigmatic Sword, who’ll need to be more amenable upped in trip, and she’s clearly the one to beat.
17:25 Velvet Whisper
Sapphire Valley (second choice) has the form to play a big part, but there was plenty to like about the debut second of VELVET WHISPER, and she looks the way to go. Shamador can also have a say if bouncing back from his odds-on Chelmsford reverse, with Miss Yorkshire appealing as the pick of the newcomers.
17:55 Badri
Londoner dropped a strong hint that he’s ready to exploit some help from the handicapper when running on strongly for second over 6f here 19 days and has possibilities if this drop back to 5f suits. However, the suggestion is BADRI, who did not have the race run to suit his patient tactics when midfield in a good Ascot handicap this month and returns to Tapeta on a good mark. Cover Point and Lucky Man also make the shortlist.
18:25 Northerner
Sixcor (second choice) won easily at Musselburgh last week and he’s high on the list, while big runs should also be forthcoming from the Michael Dods-trained pair Mecca’s Duchess and Stallone. NORTHERNER has fewer convictions than her rivals, though, and her latest fourth over C&D offered hope she could win a similar event.
18:55 Pursuit Of Truth
This might go to unexposed 3yo PURSUIT OF TRUTH, who was running for only the second time this season when runner-up on his recent handicap debut at Kempton and could turn out to be better suited by the stiffer mile here. Operation Gimcrack (second choice) may also still have potential, while Jackson Street and Sir Maxi are others with possibilities.
19:25 Barnaby (NAP)
Course scorer Jkr Cobbler (second choice) didn’t enjoy the rub of the green when fifth at Ayr, so makes appeal, but BARNABY (NAP) took his form up a notch when a stylish C&D scorer last time out and can make light of a 5lb weights rise (runner-up has gone in since). In-form duo Retraction and No Saint also need factoring in.
19:55 Havana Smoke
A case can be made for lots of these but the consistent HAVANA SMOKE is taken to gain a deserved breakthrough victory after a run of very good efforts, now the cheekpieces go back on. In-form veteran Retirement Beckons could emerge as the main danger, although Galel, Ana Emaraaty and Kapparis Kid could all have a say too in a very open handicap.
20:25 Blackcurrent
All of front-runner BLACKCURRENT‘s wins have come after a recent outing and he has plenty in his favour, back up to 6f and under Paula Muir, for whom he’s always gone well. Six-time C&D winner Fircombe Hall looks set to get involved again, likewise My Boy Jack, while Pockley is potentially well handicapped back on Tapeta.
