14:00 Teej A (each-way)
The two-day Derby meeting gets under way on ITV Racing with the Woodcote Conditions race for juveniles over 6f. TEEJ A impressed me at Chester and must have at least an each-way chance for Karl Burke and Clifford Lee. A slightly lower draw would be ideal, but my selection has experience after two runs, making a decent debut at Nottingham, and he won more easily at Chester than the winning margin suggested as she had to wait for a gap. Her low draw was a help that day but being stepped up in trip seemed to be right up her street so she might have more to come.
14:35 Finns Charm (each-way)
Now a handicap over an extended 1m. FINNS CHARM has been high in the handicap for much of his life but he has a win at Musselburgh off 3lb lower than this in similar conditions and there was some hope at Chester last time. It was reported a shoe was lost that day but I really liked the way he kept on a few places behind Dancing Magic and I suspect he’s got more to show. An each-way bet for the Johnstons and Joe Fanning.
15:10 Emily Upjohn
A big one in the Group 1 Coronation Cup over 1m4f. EMILY UPJOHN is the only horse in this line-up with a turn of speed and if she’s at anywhere near her best I hope Kieran Shoemark will pull her out and charge down the middle of the track.
Pace is an issue, although Luxembourg who usually runs over shorter might go on, but a slow gallop would help Emily as would a strong one, provided she settles. Sometimes Emily is not the easiest ride, but the defending champion who beat four rivals last year, including Westover, should be too good for John and Thady Gosden. The former Oaks second acts well on this course.
15:45 Liberty Lane
Here’s a handicap over 1m2f. LIBERTY LANE was second to Royal Ascot winner Waipiro over this trip as a novice so I have no worry about a step up in distance for the recent impressive Newmarket winner who would want ground that is good or softer. My hope needs a career best to score off 106 but he has a good draw and plenty of class. Clifford Lee rides for Karl Burke.
16:30 Ylang Ylang
Now a Classic in the Group 1 Oaks for three-year-old fillies over 1m4f. It’s boring but I’m confident that YLANG YLANG will be too good for this field for Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien. The good news is her price is not too short for a horse who was the best of these as a juvenile when her wins included a success in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile. Everything about her fifth in the 1000 Guineas suggested a longer trip would suit and her connections have always considered her an Oaks candidate. Hard to stop.
