14:15 – Atherstone Warrior
ATHERSTONE WARRIOR was coltish in the preliminaries but still fared best of those ridden close-up when fourth on debut in the Brocklesby at Doncaster recently and there should be plenty more to come from him. Previous experience is a big advantage at this time of year and he could be worth siding with to build on that. Karl Burke’s juveniles always command respect and his appealing newcomer Arabie is of strong interest, while Dukes of Haather, an encouraging seventh himself in the Brocklesby, is another likely improver.
14:45 – A Gift Of Love
There were definite signs of encouragement to glean from A GIFT OF LOVE’s exploits in maiden and novice events late on last year and, very much the type to improve further as she gains further experience, Charlie Fellowes’ well-bred filly is expected to go well now handicapping equipped with a first-time hood on her return from a break. Enochdhu, who has a reappearance run under his belt, is respected back on turf along with Clansman.
15:15 – Burj Malinka
BURJ MALINKA resumed winning ways in a six-furlong handicap at Hamilton last season and teed himself up well for this when a running-on fourth over five furlongs at Doncaster last month. The step back up in trip will suit and he can resume winning ways now back up in trip off a lenient mark. Rwenearlytheredad is next on the list if, as expected, building on his reappearance Doncaster ninth. Both Jack of Clubs and Mr Trevor are weighted to have a say too in an open handicap.
15:45 – Mattella
Most of these have something to prove, but MATTELLA has a less-exposed profile compared to the majority, and she didn’t shape badly in a fair race for the grade at Newcastle last month. This will be her debut on turf, but there is no reason why she won’t prove at least as effective on it, and she remains with the potential for better from this sort of mark. Asadjumeirah should give his running and Enderman isn’t without hope in an open and trick handicap.
16:15 – Showalong
SHOWALONG was rated much higher at his peak, and shaped much better than the bare result on his return, going well for the most part but tiring in the closing stages as though he would come on a fair bit for the run. He won second time up last season from a 3 lb higher mark and, with conditions in his favour, he is fancied to launch a bold bid. Recent Doncaster winner Zargun is a player and Ey Up It’s Maggie is respected based on her record on testing ground.
16:45 – Catton Lady
A winner on debut at Carlisle last summer, CATTON LADY improved subsequently afterwards, running well when third on nursery debut at Pontefract when last seen in October. Appealing as being on a workable mark, this longer trip could unlock further progress this year and she earns the vote. Sea The Dream has been gelded ahead of his return and is respected, with Dubai Hills and Eulace Peacock completing the shortlist.
17:15 – Love Your Work
It’s been a while since LOVE YOUR WORK last got his head in front and his record on turf stands at 1-18 but, unlike several of these rivals, he arrives here on the back of a good effort. Furthermore, the eight-year-old was a solid second off a 6 lb higher mark at Chester on his sole run on turf last season and that was on heavy ground, so conditions here will not be a concern. Devasboy will also go on the ground and could be the main danger, while Global Spirit and Fitz Perfectly have claims, too.
17:45 – Highfield Viking
HIGHFIELD VIKING opened his account on handicap debut at Doncaster last season and he held his form particularly well afterwards. He was strong enough in the market for his recent return at Chelmsford when running no sort of race, but that was too disappointing to be true, and he is well worth another chance to bounce back returned to turf in first-time blinkers. Ey Up Its Jazz and Russco head the list of dangers.
