14:00 – Louisiana Bay

LOUISIANA BAY got off the mark at Southwell on her penultimate start, and she was arguably a shade unfortunate not to follow up at Wolverhampton a couple of weeks ago as she was short of room turning into the straight while the eventual winner was making good headway out wide. Louisiana Bay was only edged out by a neck and is likely to give another good account with Oisin Murphy, who was aboard for the first time at Southwell, taking over in the saddle again.

14:30 – Viennoise

VIENNOISE made an encouraging start to her career when fourth at Windsor last season and she stepped up on that when runner-up at Wolverhampton a couple of weeks ago, finding only a useful prospect too strong. She remains open to improvement after only a couple of starts and looks the one to side with. Get Jiggy With It ended last season with a disappointing effort but was placed on her first few starts and has the best form on offer, so she appeals as the main danger.

15:00 – Pedro Valentino

PEDRO VALENTINO offered some encouragement amidst greenness when fifth on debut at Nottingham in October and he improved on that to get off the mark at Wolverhampton the following month, knuckling down well to get the verdict by a head despite still looking a little rough around the edges. Pedro Valentino, who has been gelded since last seen, remains open to further improvement and is likely to prove better than this opening handicap mark of 75. The good form of Clive Cox, who has had loads of horses go close recently, is another factor in his favour.

15:30 – Falmouth Boy

FALMOUTH BOY wasn’t seen to his best effect when down the field on his handicap debut at Southwell in December (he was badly hampered inside the final furlong) and not everything went perfectly when fourth in a seven-furlong handicap here in January as he lost ground when running very wide on the home turn. He was beaten less than half a length, though, leaving the impression that he’s capable of winning a similar contest from his lowly mark. He was a creditable fourth when dropped a furlong to this course and distance a couple of weeks ago and ought to give another good account of himself.

16:05 – City of York

CITY OF YORK ended last season with a disappointing display at Newmarket but he had been progressing well before that and had registered a hat-trick with wins here (on turf), Kempton and Newbury. He was nicely on top at the line at Newbury, scoring by a length and three-quarters from a subsequent winner, with a gap of three and a half lengths back to the third. He looks well treated off 7 lb higher than for his Newbury win and can get back on the up here.

16:40 – Hannah’s Return

HANNAH’S RETURN has had a productive all-weather campaign and made it three wins from five starts this winter when successful in classified stakes over this course and distance last month. She was strong in the betting and justified that support with a cosy three-quarter-length success, winning with a bit more in hand than the margin might suggest as she always looked to be doing enough and was closed down only late on. She returns to handicap company from a lenient mark (only 1 lb higher than when successful at Wolverhampton in October) and should prove difficult to peg back.

17:15 – Law of Average

LAW OF AVERAGE failed to make an impact in novice company. Still, he proved a different proposition on his handicap debut at Chelmsford in November, relishing the drop back in trip as he comfortably brushed his rivals aside. Law of Average raced enthusiastically at the head of affairs and went clear over a furlong out, passing the post three and a quarter lengths clear. He’s a keen-going, speedy sort with more to offer over five furlongs and he can make a winning return to action.
