Chris Dwyer’s EPIC EXPRESS was a ready winner over this course and distance two weeks ago when returning from four months off with a career-best effort to beat Darlo Pride by two and a half lengths. He sets a good standard in this apprentice contest if returning here in the same form. Masterclass did well to make late inroads from the rear when second at Southwell last time and merits consideration, with Saturnalia another to bear in mind dropped back to a sprint trip for the in-form yard of Richard Hughes.

SURVEYOR offered plenty when in the frame on both starts in her juvenile campaign for James Fanshawe, finishing fourth at Newmarket on her debut and then second at Leicester, and sets a clear standard in this fillies’ maiden with further improvement likely. Battle Queen and Xiomara have both shown ability too and look best of the remainder with experience, though newcomers Madame Sans Gene and Seamore are potential flies in the ointment, representing Charlie Johnston and Richard Hannon respectively.

PRINCESS IN ROME did well to overcome greenness when successful in a maiden over course and distance last month and she makes plenty of appeal now handicapping for Michael Bell with further improvement expected. Havana Force, runner-up in that contest, receives weight from that rival here and can pose the biggest threat again, though expensive yearling Simple Endeavour starts in handicaps from an eye-catching mark and rates as an interesting player for the Andrew Balding-Oisin Murphy combination.

FRANCESI looks nicely treated for Sean Woods and caught the eye coming from a long way back in a race run at just a modest pace when a length and a quarter second to Endless Power on his return to action at Southwell last month so he’s fancied to go one better despite a tricky draw. Fellow top weight Cosmos Raj is an obvious danger after a ready success at Wolverhampton last time, while Landlordtothestars was in good heart when last seen during the winter and can’t be ruled out.

LIL GUFF remains lightly raced on the all-weather for Daniel & Claire Kubler and did well in the circumstances when fourth at Southwell on her final start last year, so she could still have more to offer on her return in this five-furlong dash. She is taken to get the better of Moulin Booj who showed improved form when overcoming trouble in running to win at Southwell on his latest outing, with February’s course-and-distance winner Star of Lady M also considered after her narrow defeat at Newcastle last time.
16:25 Mahboob
The well-bred Shadwell-owned gelding MAHBOOB made a promising start for John & Thady Gosden when making a belated winning debut over this course and distance in December, looking very green initially but ultimately digging deep for a neck win over Verbier who has since run well in listed company. He can build on that effort to follow up. Lakota Brave opened his account at the second attempt at Newcastle last time for Archie Watson and looks the main danger, with Hurtle Wallop the pick of the remainder.
17:00 Chiefman
Just the four runners in the final event on the card but a couple of them look open to further improvement after recent wins. Archie Watson’s CHIEFMAN hadn’t met expectations last year, but after seven months off he was a commanding winner at Newcastle ten days ago and a penalty might not be enough to prevent him from doubling his tally. He can see off the challenge of Road To Wembley who also showed much improved form when making a successful handicap debut at Wolverhampton last week for Richard Hughes.
