13:10 Tranquil Sea
Interesting contest. Firebrand is likely to improve from his hurdles debut at Fairyhouse and could well improve from being gelded too. Malbay Madness did well at Galway last year and is more than interesting on his second hurdles start. Slight preference is for TRANQUIL SEA after two runner-up efforts at Punchestown and Gowran and might just be good enough.
13:45 Sir Gerhard
Though SIR GERHARD was poor last time at Cheltenham in the Stayers’ Hurdle, he can’t be opposed down in trip in this company and should win. Call Me Lyreen looks to be his only danger, though it will be fascinating to see how the returning Sempo fares
14:20 Jokers ‘N’ Clowns
Lep Around is probably due a change of luck, but may have to step aside once again in favour of JOKERS ‘N’ CLOWNS who was far more convincing at Gowran last time and looks to have more to offer. Smiling Bess should be thereabouts too if repeating her Navan run, as should Thurles Listed fourth Cast A Spell.
14:55 Now Is The Hour
An interesting race, even if the best horses in the race are running over too short a trip. NOW IS THE HOUR comes in here as the in-form horse after his impressive win at Haydock but he is effective over shorter. He might just have too many guns here for last year’s Coral Cup runner-up An Epic Song.
15:30 Asterion Forlonge
It is a while since ASTERION FORLONGE has run over fences but he has been running well in top-class staying hurdles lately and if his jumping holds up, he should account for Lucid Dreams.
16:05 Shadow Rider (NAP)
Smaller field than normal but no less competitive. Ashdale Bob is coming down the handicap and could be dangerous with a 7lb claimer on board. Coral Cup seventh Da Capo Glory should go well if this doesn’t come too soon, while Thurles winner Chosen Witness could have a little in hand of the handicapper. The selection is SHADOW RIDER(nap), who may have got away lightly with a 10lb penalty for his Fairyhouse win. He can score again
16:40 Jerk
Three last-time-out winners clash; JERK, Thedancingfarrier and Lovely Reaction. Preference is for the first-named who relished this trip at Leopardstown last time in similar conditions and can defy an 8lb hike. Cher Why Not caught the eye last time and is a danger.
17:15 Churchroad Prince
The market leader is likely to be the Mullins newcomer Jackson Wood, but this looks a decent race. Charles Byrnes introduces a half-brother to Blazing Khal in the shape of Famous Sonnet. Still, preference is for CHURCHROAD PRINCE, possibly unlucky to be beaten in a 2m7f maiden hurdle at Punchestown in January. She’s A Nightowl is capable of further improvement and could be a factor.
