BANTEER showed ability on the first of his two starts in bumpers last season and he also offered encouragement when third in a novice hurdle here on his second start over jumps, shaping better than the distance beaten would suggest after making a bad blunder at the final flight. Banteer has disappointed on his other two starts over hurdles but he now goes handicapping from a potentially lenient mark based on his bumper debut, and it’s still relatively early days for him.
14:30 Sherborne
SHERBORNE, a dual winner over hurdles in the summer, registered his first win over fences when scoring in emphatic fashion over this course and distance in December. He ran disappointingly and was pulled up at Exeter three weeks later, but he got back on track at Lingfield last month, shaping better than the result would suggest in third after looking like the winner’s main threat for much of the straight. A stumble on landing at the last also exaggerated the distance beaten, and he is worth siding with back at the scene of his prior chase success.
15:00 Elle Est Beau
ELLE EST BEAU offered encouragement when third in a steadily-run event on her handicap debut at Sandown in December, leaving the impression that she would have benefited from a sterner test at the trip, and she looked set to build on that promise back at the same venue in January only to crash out at the final flight when looking the likely winner.
Elle Est Beau was still in front and seemed to be finding enough when coming down, so she remains well treated following a 2lb rise in the weights, especially as her unexposed profile offers hope that there’s more to come. She has a stout pedigree – her unraced dam is closely related to Grand National winner Many Clouds – and she can see out this longer trip.
15:30 Juniper
JUNIPER, a dual winner for Harry Whittington last season, shaped as if amiss and was pulled up on her reappearance for Anthony Honeyball over this course and distance in October. However, she proved a different proposition when returning from another break at Taunton last month, impressing with her jumping on her way to an emphatic 11-length success. She doesn’t have many miles on the clock for a ten-year-old and looks a big player following a 4lb rise for her recent success. Harry Cobden, who was aboard for the first time at Taunton, retains the ride.
16:00 Goonhilly
GOONHILLY ran respectably when faced with a stiff task in the competitive Imperial Cup Handicap at Sandown earlier this month and should appreciate this return to calmer waters. He had previously been beaten only half a length in a maiden over this course and distance, shaping as if he may have won had he not conceded first run, and he sets the standard for the others to aim at. Cheekpieces are added in an attempt eke out further improvement.
16:35 Dont Tell Su
This looks like an excellent opportunity for bumper winner DONT TELL SU to get off the mark over hurdles. Dont Tell su has finished placed on all three starts over hurdles, running to a level that sets a good standard in this company. He’s not progressed since an encouraging debut second at Chepstow in October but his bumper form and powerful physique suggest there should be more to come at some point down the line. Zoeman has shaped with promise on both starts over hurdles and can chase Dont Tell Su home.
17:05 Plaisir des Flos
PLAISIR DES FLOS was upped in trip for his handicap debut at Sedgefield a couple of weeks ago and he left his previous efforts behind to get off the mark. He scored with a good bit in hand after looming up early in the straight, passing the post five and a half lengths clear, and a 9lb rise in the weights may not be enough to stop him following up now that he’s up and running.
