13:15 Kartoon and Co

A tricky start, but the most appealing of these is KARTOON AND CO, who is likely to get a strong pace to aim at for the first time here (has made the running on each of his three starts to date, albeit seemingly more out of necessity rather than by design). This stiff track could also be conducive to an improved display, not that there’s much wrong with his form as things stand. Through The Ages is clearly going the right way and is respected with Harry Cobden booked for a yard that has taken three of the last five renewals. Confirmed soft ground lover Valadon, who improved when winning at Newbury last time, also enters calculations.

13:50 Hashthing

A race won by Stayers’ Hurdle contender Crambo 12 months ago. Aintree bumper third HASTHING had the drop to two miles as an excuse at Newbury last time and looks very well treated on the form of his defeat of the re-opposing Pic Roc at Catterick prior to that. That rival is one of two interesting contenders from the in-form Ben Pauling stable along with Champagne Twist. Paul Nicholls has won two of the last four renewals and, with Emailandy likely to prefer quicker ground, his hat-trick-seeking Fire Flyer completes the shortlist in a typically competitive renewal.

14:25 Sans Bruit

Plenty of connections eyeing the Imperial Cup/Cheltenham Festival double, and it’s recent French recruit SANS BRUIT who gets the tentative nod having shaped as if better for the run on his return/yard debut at Doncaster six weeks ago. His usual hood is reapplied, and he can give Paul Nicholls a second successive victory in this at the expense of the exciting Making Headway, who doubled his tally at Newbury four weeks ago and looks a fascinating contender now handicapping. Spirit d’Aunou has a fine course record and won on this card 12 months ago, while Go Dante, Jipcot and Bad are a handful of others worth considering, also.

15:00 Just Call Me Lucy

A race that has been spread around the leading British stables in recent years, but JUST CALL ME LUCY, who represents one of the smaller stables on show, was highly impressive at Carlisle 83 days ago and sets the standard on that form. She’s preferred to Rules-debutante Honky Tonk Highway, who looked a good prospect when winning a point and cost £165,000 as a result. Sunset Marquesa has already proved she can compete at this level, so she also warrants respect along with Timeform ‘Horse In Focus’ I’ve Madeupmymind, who shaped with plenty of promise on debut, and her stablemate Magical Annie.

15:35  Golden Son

Top-weight GOLDEN SON, a Graded-winning hurdler in France, belatedly built on the promise of his chasing debut to score at Kempton last time and could have even more to offer on ground that suits with the headgear retained. Kotmask has already had a productive season over fences and is respected again as he chases a hat-trick, albeit in better company. Heros is another player on the back of an unlucky second at Wetherby last time. He would be dangerous if gifted an early lead, but that might not be likely with Mylesfromwicklow in opposition.

16:10 Rose of Arcadia

A few with chances but ROSE OF ARCADIA looks the way to go on the back of her Grand Military Gold Cup second over C&D last time out with that form having been very well advertised by the winner Farceur du Large since. Bangers And Cash, who has run well here before, could emerge as the chief threat, especially if a recent wind op ekes out more improvement. Switch Hitter and Ballygrifincottage make up the shortlist along with the lightly-weighted Trincomalee for whom Harry Cobden looks an eye-catching jockey booking.

16:40 Es Perfecto

The consistent ES PERFECTO remains very low-mileage as a nine-year-old and ran another fine race when third to Ginny’s Destiny in the Timeform Novices’ Handicap at Cheltenham (form already working out strongly as ever) six weeks ago. He’s fancied to prove tough to beat operating from the same mark, with Southwell winner Imperial Bede the next best if putting his recent Kelso spill behind him. Hudson de Grugy, who didn’t jump well last time is well-handicapped, and Nocte Volatus, who is also on a fair mark, are others to consider.
