Robert Cowelll’s runner didn’t quite manage to come up to scratch on the turf over in Dubai, so the team have had a rethink. They start off back over a course and distance where not only was he successful prior to that trip abroad, he also stopped the clock in a course record 56.20. This looks to get the perfect set up again, as there is a boat-load of natural pace for Clarendon House to aim at.
Southwell 15:20 – Eydon
Andrew Balding’s runner looked destined for the very top when breaking his maiden tag in the Feilden Stakes at HQ over 9 furlongs and subsequently ran a cracking fourth in the 2,000 Guineas behind Coroebus. It would be a tremendous training performance where he to win from 665 days away from the track, but we are dealing with a top-class outfit who know how to get one ready. Eydon is completely unexposed over the 1m 3f distance.
Southwell 16:30 – Aqwaam
Aqwaam chased home the rock solid performer, Max Vega over this distance last time at Wolverhampton but switching to this venue will prove no problem whatsoever. Added to that, it looks as if the team have finally settled on him being a very solid 1m 4f handicapper. He has placed twice under Kieran O’Neill around this venue when trying the extended 2m trip and can be seen fully effective now back down half a mile in distance.
Southwell 17:05 – Evaluation
The top weight should be well up to carrying top weight on his first start for Lucinda Russell over this 2m trip. A review of his career will show you that he is much better when held up and produced with a late change of gear. Sitting handy on his last few runs has proven the point and a mark now of 88 is within his reach so let’s hope he gets a patient ride.
