17:30 – Phantasy Mac
PHANTASY MAC arrives on a lengthy losing run, but she is a two-time winner over this course and distance, and she figures on a handy mark. Her best recent effort also came at this track and over this trip, and she wasn’t seen to best effect over a mile and a half last time in a muddling race. Connections have booked Simon Walker in this amateur contest, which may be a sign of intent, and Phantasy Mac will make all of these go if running her race on these terms. Last-time-out winner English Spirit is a threat and Finn Russell has been in good form for a while.
18:00 – Charlatan
This is a pretty exposed bunch barring the David Simcock-trained CHARLATAN and he looks an obvious selection to complete a hat-trick. He has shown improved form since returning from a break, winning his last two starts over a mile at Kempton and Lingfield, and he had something to spare on his latest win last week. Charlatan was doing all of his best work at the finish that day, suggesting he’ll relish this slightly longer trip, and he is taken to overcome a wide draw and come out on top again. Inexplicable looks solid and he is clear second choice ahead of Brave Display and Kenstone.
18:30 – Kings Reign
Those with experience don’t set the bar too high in this novice event, and given that both of the Charlie Appleby-trained newcomers cost a fortune, they may be the two to focus on. KING’S REIGN was a 1,500,000 guineas purchase as a yearling and is a half-brother to smart two-year-old winner Silver Knott. The market will clearly reveal more, but he makes plenty of appeal on paper. Torrent sets the standard on form and is the obvious one to choose from of those with form.
19:00 – Harry Brown
This looks a cracking sprint handicap where cases can be made for the majority, but it is HARRY BROWN who shades the vote. Though below par on turf when last seen in the autumn, he’s now 2 lb below his last winning mark, and the return to the all-weather is another positive factor. It’s hard to fault Intervention and he looks set for another bold show, while Alligator Alley and Silky Wilkie are both capable of better than they showed behind One Night Stand at Lingfield.
19:30 – Baileysgutfeeling
BAILEYSGUTFEELING was a four-time winner for Kevin Philippart de Foy, but he rather lost his way for Nikki Evans last year, but as a result he starts out for new connections on a potentially handy mark. He has joined a yard that does especially well with new recruits, while the addition of first-time cheekpieces and booking of leading all-weather rider Rossa Ryan both point towards a big run on his return to action. She’s Centimental responded well to this headgear when scoring at Kempton and is another to consider along with the in-form He’s A Gentleman.
20:00 – Charlies Choice
CHARLIE’S CHOICE confirmed earlier promise when opening his account over an extended nine furlongs at this course last month and he followed up with any amount in hand over 11 furlongs at Kempton 10 days ago. He was very well supported on that occasion and proved much too good for some more-exposed rivals. Charlie’s Choice is just 5 lb higher now and he is weighted to complete a hat-trick. Liseo produced his best effort yet when getting on top close home at Kempton and a 3 lb rise looks manageable, so he is feared most.
20:30 – Tonal
TONAL again ran well on just his second start in handicaps when fourth here four days ago, that despite being intimidated late on. He’s far less exposed than most he meets here and gets the nod to confirm the promise of that run now upped in trip. Pink Jazz, who was well backed last time, would need considering if supported again for his shrewd stable, with Isle of Wolves and Cryptos Dream others to consider.
