Newbury 13.30 – Emitom (each way)
ITV Saturday gets under way here with a handicap hurdle over three miles. Mud lovers are going to be key on the card. EMITOM is gradually running into a bit of form for Alan King having once been with Warren Greatrex. He didn’t run badly at Ludlow last time behind Saint Davy and while up 2lb for that he’s still way below his highest mark of 155. Has form at Newbury of 112 and goes in soft ground. A decent each-way chance under Tom Cannon.
Newbury 14.05 – Shishkin
Up in class here for the Grade 2 Dunman Chase over nearly 3m. It won’t surprise me if Sam Brown runs ok if it’s deep mud but on all we know SHISHKIN will win for Nico de Boinville and Nicky Henderson. He’s a class act and would have won the King George last time but for a trip in the closing stages. Has plenty of soft ground form including a second to Envoi Allen in the Ryanair.
Newbury 14.40 – Editeur Du Gite
Now the Grade 2 Game Spirit Chase over an extended 2m. Hard to split most of these. EDITEUR DU GITE has a fourth in a Grand Annual on heavy and might be better suited to very soft conditions that Boothill or Edwardstone, for all the latter two have form with juice. Gary Moore’s runner was poor last time at Cheltenham behind Elixir du Nutz but prior to that had that rival back in third at Kempton and if on a going day he might be hard to peg back under Niall Houlihan.
Newbury 15.15 – Altobelli (each way)
The big betting race of the day in a handicap hurdle over an extended 2m. Iberico Lord will enjoy getting back on soft ground and I suspect Under Control has more to give after a fine effort at Doncaster. That all said I have to go each-way ALTOBELLI who has been knocking at the door this season at both Ascot behind Knickerbockerglory and Luccia. He stays on the same mark as last time of 132 and might well enjoy going back on juicy ground rather than the good last time. His former as a youngster was all in soft. Massive each-way chance for Johnny Burke.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
