13:40 Arlo

A fair hurdler in Ireland for Stuart Crawford, ARLO shaped encouragingly on his first start for Dr Richard Newland when third to Tommy Time in a maiden over this course and distance in October. While he hasn’t taken to fences in his last couple of starts, he can leave those efforts behind, return to the smaller obstacles, and open his account. Trailblazer stepped forward from his hurdles debut when runner-up in a novice at Kelso last time behind easy winner Doyen du Bar and could be the main danger ahead of hurdles debutant Paris Lights, who was fairly useful on the Flat.

14:10 SCHMILSSON

Two stand out in the second division of the maiden hurdle, which lacks strength in depth. SCHMILSSON is preferred to interesting hurdles newcomer Reach For The Moon. Olly Murphy’s gelding is clearly inferior to his market rival on the Flat. But has improved with each run over hurdles so far. He caught the eye when second at Southwell last time and perhaps has a more solid profile than one who clearly hasn’t been the easiest to get to the track, for all Reach For The Moon won the Solario Stakes at two. Badlands Boy is a very modest pick for third.

14:40 YOU SAY NOTHING

Claims can be made for most of the six in this handicap chase, including previous course- and-distance winner YOU SAY NOTHING. The enthusiastic front-runner ran a cracker when runner-up to Zambezi Fix at Chepstow over Christmas and, given some time to get over those exertions, it would come as no surprise to see him firmly in the mix with Christian Williams boasting a particularly good record at Sedgefield. Easy Leicester winner Galice Macalo and Harel du Marais, who arrive on the back of quite a promising chasing debut at the same track, head up the dangers.

15:10 MIDNIGHT SHUFFLE

MIDNIGHT SHUFFLE was steadily progressive for Stuart Coltherd last season when she made all in a mares’ novice at Musselburgh and perhaps still needed the run when third to big improver Masked Dance at Doncaster four weeks ago, so she’s given the tentative vote in this mares’ handicap hurdle. Taunton scorer Sawpit Sienna is respected up 6 lb. While Purple Gown’s Flat form provides hope for better still now handicapping, and she also needs considering after coming up against subsequent Dublin Racing Festival winner Brucio when fourth at Catterick last time.

15:40 BEBSIDE BANTER

A low-grade handicap chase in which Chris Grant’s BEBSIDE BANTER can make light of a 4 lb rise and extend his unbeaten Sedgefield chase record to three as he appeared to have a bit in hand when making all for his latest success here last month. Methusalar looked set to go close when unseating two out over course and distance in November, and with a visor on for the first time is the second choice ahead of Big Bee Hive, who caught the eye in a hurdle here last time and makes his chasing debut off the same mark.

16:10 JUST CALL ME AL

JUST CALL ME AL might be worth siding with to build on his latest Musselburgh second in a conditional jockeys’ race reunited with Brian Hughes this time and returned to a venue which suits him well as a dual course-and-distance winner a couple of seasons ago. Coup de Gold and Swift Reply, first and second over course and distance on their latest starts, are others to consider. The returning Ring Pretender is less exposed than most of these and needs keeping a close eye on in the betting, having shown promise on both previous hurdle starts.

16:40 TOWNHILL

Tom Lacey’s TOWNHILL looked a real stayer when justifying support with an improved display to score at Doncaster over three miles last time. With more to come over this still longer trip, he takes marginal preference over Rumble B, who the handicapper has taken a big chance with, and is another who’ll be suited by this stamina test. Onestepatatime and Victory Echo have been over fences lately, the latter coming back from a break here, and are both of interest, returning to hurdling off lower marks.
