13:20 – Liari

Paul Nicholls has a good record in the Scottish Triumph Hurdle and his runner LIARI gets the nod to remain unbeaten over hurdles and provide him with a fourth win in this listed race since 2016 as he won a similar event at Aintree in December after a debut success over hurdles at Wincanton. There are a few possible threats, headed by An Bradan Feasa who has found only the useful Burdett Road too good for him over hurdles so far, along with Roaring Legend and Balboa who was second to An Bradan Feasa at Cheltenham last time.

13:50 – Beau Balko

A fairly useful winner over hurdles, BEAU BALKO hasn’t quite matched that level in three starts over fences in novice handicaps so far, but he still remains capable of better as a chaser having made a bad mid-race mistake (jumped fine otherwise) at Hereford last time when runner-up to Chanceux. He is taken to go one better, with Cedar Hill feared most with his recent run behind him when a late faller here last month. Mint Gold, another who came to grief last time, is also considered having won here in November.

14:25 – Recoup

Cases can be made for most in this novices’ hurdle, but preference is for RECOUP who pulled well clear with subsequent winner Choccabloc on his hurdling debut at Ludlow back in October and should have plenty more to offer in this sphere on his second start for Fergal O’Brien. Titanium Moon wasn’t hard pressed to make it four novice wins in a row when last seen at Stratford last summer, so she’s put forward as the main danger, ahead of one of the Irish raiders Hypotenus who is clearly talented but needs to learn to jump better.

15:00 – Absolute Notions

A case can be made for plenty of these in the biggest field on the card for this Pertemps Qualifier but Gordon Elliott’s ABSOLUTE NOTIONS appeals as a likely improver now going into handicaps so is fancied to follow up a very easy success in a minor event at Fairyhouse in November. Fellow Irish challenger Carnfunnock figures on a handy-looking mark so must enter calculations, while a solid case can also be made for Doncaster winner Peking Rose and the likeable Wakool, twice successful over this course and distance.

15:35 – Tommy’s Oscar

The high-class TOMMY’S OSCAR often keeps better company than this and has looked better than ever over fences this season, making a winning return at Kelso and shaping as if still in form when fourth in the Old Roan at Aintree on his next start, so he can defy top weight. Frero Banbou lost all chance with a bad blunder at Lingfield two weeks ago and remains of interest, while Corrigeen Rock surely has more to offer over this trip after his good second to Fidelio Vallis over course and distance on New Year’s Day.

16:05 – Sleeping Satellite

Plenty to ponder in an interesting handicap hurdle with SLEEPING SATELLITE earning the vote. Donald McCain’s lightly-raced hurdler showed improved form when runner-up at Doncaster last month, finding only another well-treated sort, Rare Middleton too strong, and this longer trip could well unlock further progress. Impact du Bonheur needs

considering also for Paul Nicholls, with Welsh Charger and last month’s course-and-distance one-two Duyfken and Lihyan completing the shortlist.

16:35 – Wicked Thoughts

WICKED THOUGHTS was a little underwhelming when sent off favourite on his bumper debut for Paul Nicholls at Ffos Las back in October but he’s open to plenty of improvement based on his point form, so he’s marginally preferred to Sandy Thomson’s Getagin, who has a penalty after landing a gamble over course and distance in December. Brian Hughes’s mount Kinbara Hills looks the pick of the newcomers and makes the journey from Northern Ireland.
