Cheltenham Tips: Rory Delargy’s 12/1 Triumph Hurdle ante-post pick

By a process of elimination, Rory reckons Kargese could run a big race at the Dublin Racing Festival and leap-frog up the Triumph Hurdle market.

In the third of this year’s Paddy Power Media’s ‘From The Horse’s Mouth’ podcast ‘Cheltenham Countdown’, host Tom Nugent together with former champion jockey turned TV pundit Ruby Walsh and well-known journalist and broadcaster Rory Delargy, look at the Triumph Hurdle on day four of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival.

    RORY DELARGY

We know Burdett Road is talented because he won at Royal Ascot, and he’s a smart prospect, but whether he’s a hurdler? He certainly didn’t jump with fluency last time out and literally kicked two down.

His form is nothing special. I don’t think he has had to beat an awful lot so far even if An Bradan Feasa who he beat at Cheltenham, followed up next time when beating Balbao. The speed they were going in that trial didn’t take him out of his comfort zone.

However, when it comes to the Festival, he will need to perform better as they will be going a lot faster, and his hurdling will need to improve if he wants to win. That trial was on the Old Course, the Triumph Hurdle is on the New Course. It’s much stiffer but his speed could carry him from hurdle to hurdle there as there’s a big run from the second last to the last hurdle. That might help him.

He will be up against Sir Gino, which will be an intriguing clash because their styles are completely different.

His jumping wasn’t perfect at Kempton but he jumped like a horse that has done plenty of schooling and will happily jump a fence in time. He gets a lot of air between himself and the hurdles, which is the opposite of Burdett Road, who jumps too low.

They can both improve, and they will with a little extra schooling. My fundamental feeling is that there were a few horses in the Leopardstown race (that Kala Conti won from Kargese) who could end up being better than both  the English horses at Cheltenham.

Kala Conti and Mighty Bandit are both players from the Gordon Elliott yard. The latter was impressive at Punchestown and it’s dangerous to dismiss him. His run at Leopardstown was poor, but he scoped badly after it.

It’s different to nominate one but Kargese looks like she will improve a lot for a well-run race and did well to finish second to Kala Conti having to swing wide off the bend. She may run in the Spring Juvenile Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival and I would back her in it. The winner of that will probably leap to the head of the Triumph Hurdle market so maybe Kargese could be the value play now?
