13:50 – Baron De Midleton

BARON DE MIDLETON is the senior runner, but he’s still capable of close to useful form and stands out at the weights against lesser opposition in this claiming hurdle. Having been chasing lately, he took advantage of a lower mark over hurdles when successful in a handicap at Market Rasen three weeks ago and should take a bit of stopping if in the same form, with conditional William Maggs keeping the ride from last time. The Olly Murphy pair Transatlantic and Believe Jack can give him the most to do.

14:25 – TARA COVE

TARA COVE has already won three points in Ireland, and while he was only able to achieve modest form in his four starts over hurdles for Donald McCain, there’s a good chance he will up his game now switched to the larger obstacles. He’s therefore preferred to Caeruleum, who was an encouraging second on his chasing debut at Exeter but disappointed at Wincanton last time. Nine Nine Nine has failed to complete on his last couple of starts but is also respected as he’d been in reasonable form before that.

    14:55 – AWAYTHELAD

AWAYTHELAD did the job well when getting off the mark for Ben Pauling in first-time cheekpieces in a maiden hurdle at Ludlow earlier this month, and he is marginally preferred to Roger Pol. The latter was clear of the rest when runner-up to the thriving Immortal Fame in a handicap at Ascot last time and won’t go down without a fight. While Rocket Ronald’s debut over hurdles, when chasing home the odds on Hasthing over this course and distance, was promising, and he will ensure that this is not a two-horse race.

    15:25 – COOLEENYMORE

Just the five runners for this mares’ handicap hurdle and none can be ruled out. There has been enough encouragement to glean from COOLEENYMORE’s efforts in handicaps to think her present mark is exploitable and dropped in trip after finishing third over three miles at Wincanton behind Johnny B in a novice contest last time. She could well be ready to strike for Robert Walford. Another Day Out and Walk of No Shame, who were placed in similar events at Sandown and Newbury, respectively last time, can pose the chief threats.

    15:55 – OXYGEN

Another chance is given to Venetia Williams’ runner, OXYGEN, to show he’s still on a good mark. He began the season with wins at Lingfield and Plumpton but disappointed in his hat-trick bid at the latter track earlier this month, having settled into a good rhythm in front for a long way. Nocte Volatus has been performing with credit, finishing placed in all three of his runs this season, and a further 2 lb drop in his mark should see him get very competitive here. Top-weight Grandads Cottage should also have a say and is tongue-tied for the first time.

    16:25 – JO LESCRIBAA

The most interesting of these in the biggest field on the card is JO LESCRIBAA, who looks likely to improve now, moving up in trip for this handicap debut after finishing third over two miles here last time. Silver Atom should have a part to play on the back of creditable efforts at Hereford on his first two starts since switching to Archie Watson, and he is the second choice ahead of Passing Kate and Well Paid Soldier. Lady Balko is also worthy of mention.
