It’s Thyestes Chase day at Gowran Park on Thursday and it’s a really popular meeting in the Irish calendar as huge crowds turn up to watch good competition.

Gowran Park 13:05 – Listenheretomejack

Eoin Doyle’s Listenheretomejack won this contest last year and despite being 7lb higher in the ratings, now Shane O’Callaghan’s 5lb claim offsets most of that burden. His run last time out looked the perfect warm-up for a repeat crack at this contest and he can go close again for the local trainer.

Gowran Park 13:40 – Captain Cody

A more familiar local trainer is Willie Mullins who saddles Captain Cody and the conditions of this 2m 4f Ladies Auction maiden hurdle are interesting in tat the runners must have cost below a certain threshold and is effectively only open to bumper winners in races under a certain value. Jody Townend knows Captain Cody really well having won a bumper on him at Limerick and the pair then finished sixth in the Festival bumper at Cheltenham before disappointing at Aintree. Team Mullins may have found an ideal opportunity to get a hurdles win into Captain Cody.

Gowran Park 14:15 – Monkfish

The former Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle and Brown Advisory Novices Chase winner Monkfish makes his reappearance after 273 days off the track. Once a real rising star of the game his career was curtailed by injury but he will handle this ground. This is a very different race to the one he disappointed in at Punchestown last April on his second run back after two years off the track.

Gowran Park 14:50 – Glengouly

Fakir D’alene is a model of consistency in these big chases and ran very well in the Troytown Chase at Navan when third to stablemate Coko Beach before being brought down in the Paddy Power Chase at Christmas. He may not be that well handicapped now he has the services of a really good claimer and former Galway Palte winning rider in Danny Gilligan who claims 5lb. That will help. The heavy ground is going to be hard work so I have plumped for the Willie Mullins-trained Glengouly. He is not that exposed in these big handicap fields and beat Telmesomethinggirl comfortably at Thurles 14 months ago. Paul Townend has opted to ride him and Glengouly could be dangerous off his handicap mark.

Gowran Park 15:25 – Arctic Bresil

I watched Arctic Bresil win a maiden hurdle at Cork and he was impressive that day. He’s got a point-to-point background and his fourth to Spillane’s Tower at Christmas in a Novice Chase can be seen in a better light now as the winner has since won a Grade 3 contest at Punchestown, beating the odds-on favourite Blood Destiny. The ground will be key and Tactical Move has a marked tendency to jump left-handed which won’t help on a right-handed track.

Gowran Park 16:00 – Whateleys Quest

A tricky 2m hurdle and Charles Byrnes’ runner Whateleys Quest is a tentative pick. The market will be the best guide in this contest as a few of these are underexposed with Gordon Elliott’s Nathan Wales also in that bracket on handicap debut, along with Whateleys Quest.

Gowran Park 16:30 – Harry’s Dream

Harry’s Dream is by Califet and related to four smart horses and he could be overlooked in the market There are question marks over a few of the principles. A tongue tie on this ground and the form the Joseph O’Brien-trained Samyr first time up has put me off now. He was the original pick but I’ll stick with Harry’s Dream.
