Cheltenham Tips: Rory Delargy’s 14/1 National Hunt Chase ante-post pick

Rory says Gordon Elliott's Favori De Champdou could be worth keeping on side in a wide open National Hunt Chase.

Rory Delargy’s National Hunt Chase Antepost Tips:

Favori De Champdou

In the second of this year’s Paddy Power Media’s ‘From The Horse’s Mouth’ podcast ‘Cheltenham Countdown’, host Tom Nugent together with former champion jockey turned tv pundit Ruby Walsh and well-known journalist and broadcaster Rory Delargy, look at the National Hunt Chase on day one of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival.

The UK’s Champion trainer Paul Nicholls knows the National Hunt Chase doesn’t have the same status these days as the Brown Advisory Novices Chase. If he has one that may be more suited to the NH Chase he’s only going to run one in it if it’s no chance of winning the Brown Advisory.

They jockey’s experience is crucial here too as it is limited to amateurs. I liked Three Card Brag last season and he looks a very strong stayer and that will suit for this marathon 3m 6f trip.

He’s run pretty well so far this season although he’s been a beaten favourite twice behind Corbetts Cross on seasonal debut and more recently when long odds-on behind Monty’s Star. His jumping needs to improve and I’d like to see him at least once more before the Festival.

It looks an open-looking contest at this stage and Three Card Brag looks a fair price.

However, another who catches the eye is his stablemate, Favori De Champdou.

The Gigginstown House runner beat Affordable Fury at Galway despite disappointing over Christmas in Grade One company when fifth of six to Grangeclare West.

He’s a nine-year-old now and probably not up to Grade One standard so a race of this race should suit him. He was among the favourites for the National Hunt Chase pre-Christmas but his price has doubled since that Leopardstown defeat and that’s an over reaction in the market.

I’m not overly keen on backing anything at this stage, but he’s one I would at the prices.
