    GREER looked a useful prospect when making a successful debut at Chester last month, doing well under the circumstances having met a bit of trouble entering the final two furlongs. There should be more to come from him with that initial experience under his belt and he is fancied to defy a penalty to maintain his unbeaten record in what doesn’t look the deepest novice event.

    14:10 Highwaygrey

    HIGHWAYGREY shaped better than the bare result when seventh over this course and distance a couple of weeks ago, leaving the impression he should have finished closer having got no run in the straight. Successful from a British Horseracing Authority (BHA) mark of 86 a couple of seasons ago, he is starting to look dangerously well handicapped off 68 and the promise of his latest run suggests he could be worth another chance to belatedly take advantage of his falling mark.

     

    14:45 Dragon Leader

    DRAGON LEADER is very much the one to beat on these terms if getting back to the form he showed when winning a valuable sales race at York’s Ebor Festival. That was a useful performance to rout a big field by four and a half lengths and these conditions should suit him better than when losing his unbeaten record over a slightly longer trip/on softer ground at Doncaster last time.

    15:20 Volterra

    VOLTERRA failed to meet market expectations when third at Ayr last time, but he shaped well again in defeat and remains one to be positive about having made a promising start to his career in the main.

    His debut run in a red-hot maiden at the Ebor Festival suggests there is a useful colt in there somewhere and the extra experience he gained at Ayr should stand him in good stead as he tries to open his account at the third attempt.

    15:55 Ramazan

    RAMAZAN took another step forward when filling the runner-up spot in the Ayr Gold Cup last time, only losing out in the final strides. He was one of just a pair of three-year-olds in that prestigious handicap and it was a huge run from him to go so close from a BHA mark of 101.

    Clearly in the form of his life, he won’t be out of place in this listed heat and is fancied to take the step up in class in his stride to bring up his third success of the campaign.

     

    16:30 Hortzadar

    HORTZADAR has returned to form on his last couple of starts, first ending a long losing run at Ayr last month and then running at least as well in defeat from 3lb higher when second over the same course and distance on Tuesday.

    He’s back up in grade today, but it’s encouraging that he’s strung two good runs together and he retains plenty of handicapping scope judged on the pick of his form.

    17:05 Ala Kaifi

    ALA KAIFI was well backed and duly resumed his progress to get off the mark at Doncaster last time, impressing with his strength at the finish in a soundly-run race.

    That form is working out well – the third and fourth both won next-time-out – and a 3lb rise in the weights is unlikely to prove beyond him in his follow-up bid, with the markedly longer trip expected to unlock more improvement.

    17:35 Mersea

    MERSEA had a race to forget when fifth at Pontefract last week, nearly coming down on the home turn before meeting more trouble when starting to make headway in the straight. She looked unlucky not to finish closer and is worth backing to gain compensation here having been consistent in the main since getting off the mark for the season at Carlisle in August.
