Ayr 13:15 – Medyaf
1.5 points each way
There are risks attached but the profile of this Harry Skelton four-year-old Meydaf looks well suited to this type of test. He’s extremely unexposed over hurdles and drops in class having found the two runs in Grade 2 a bit hot without being embarrassed. He’s open to heaps of improvement too. He makes his handicap debut off a decent looking mark and he won twice at the back end of last year on better ground. If ready to roll, he’s a tasty each-way bet.
Ayr 13:50 – Rocky Man
1.5 points each way
Another Dan Skelton-trained horse in Rocky Man and there’s a lot to like about his chances. He was third of 14 when last seen at Ascot off today’s mark and he has finished second off one mark lower previous to that. He looks the type who will prefer a sounder running surface and at five years old, he’s open to all kinds of improvement. The yard’s in good form and although he’s probably going to have to find a little bit, you can’t rule him out.
Newbury 14:05 – Marshal Dan
1.5 points each way
I love Marshal Dan’s chances and a very interesting stat is all 12 horses who’ve finished in the first three in this race in the past four years have been drawn in stalls one-six, apart from the winner last year who was in seven, so you’d like to think low draws have an edge. Marshal Dan should be fitter than most having had a tune up run and will relish the ground even if the rain continues. He’s a front running type who’s already won here on three occasions and although he’s older than a lot of his rivals, he still has plenty of appeal.
Ayr 15:35 – Aurora Thunder
1.5 points each way
Aurora Thunder has won twice at Ayr and definitely holds the best course form in this field. He’s gone close twice in this race in the last two runnings, narrowly losing by a half length two years ago off a mark of 116 and falling at the last in the 2022 race off a mark of 119. He gets in today off 111 which makes him very well handicapped and this race will have been a target for him, so everything points towards a big big run.
Newbury 15:50 – Call My Bluff
1.5 points each way
Call My Bluff is a proper stayer who is going to relish these testing conditions over the two mile trip. His mark of 88 will require a career best but he finished a head down at Chester off a mark of 86 last year. He ran well fresh on debut last year and rides for a trainer Dominic Ffrench Davis, who is in red hot form. He’s one of the outsiders but he probably should be shorter and it would be no surprise to see him shorten as the rain continues.
