BUTCH showed improved form to open his account over hurdles at Uttoxeter last time, finding extra when challenged to get the verdict by a neck. He now makes the switch to handicaps and looks potentially well treated from an opening BHA mark of 120, with further progress on the cards over this slightly longer trip.
RESPLENDENT GREY achieved a fairly useful level of form in two starts in bumpers, producing his best effort when making a successful debut at Market Rasen in December. He clearly has plenty of ability and looks one to follow now making the switch to hurdling in a race where those with previous experience in this sphere don’t set the bar too high.
MARAJMAN was beaten a long way at Market Rasen last time, but he shaped better than the bare result, leaving the impression he would have finished closer but for a bad mistake two out. He is refitted with cheekpieces today and appeals as very much the one to beat if rediscovering anything like his best hurdling form in these calmer waters.
OSCARS LEADER took a step back in the right direction when filling the runner-up spot on his latest outing at Bangor, staying on well to pass the post only two and a quarter lengths behind the winner. It remains to be seen whether he can build on that run, but it could be worth giving him the benefit of the doubt from a 9 lb lower mark than when winning at Newcastle in February last year.
FIADH returned to form from out of the blue when successful over this course and distance a couple of weeks ago, seemingly benefiting from the application of cheekpieces as she put her rivals to the sword by four and a half lengths in comfortable fashion. She is only 5 lb higher in the weights today and promises to be thereabouts once again in her follow-up bid if the headgear continues to have the desired effect.
GENTLEMAN DE MAI offered plenty to work on when finishing a good second on his chasing debut at Ayr in February, sticking to his task well in first-time cheekpieces to be beaten only two and a half lengths. That form is working out exceptionally well – the others who finished in the first five places have all won since – and his scope for more improvement suggests he is very much one to be interested in from a 5 lb higher mark.
SUPPORT ACT shaped well when filling the runner-up spot on his Rules debut at Kempton in February, running green over two furlongs out before rallying again to pass the post only six and a half lengths behind the winner. That form sets the standard here on Timeform’s weight-adjusted ratings and it looks a good opportunity for him to get off the mark if learning from that initial experience.
COCO MADEMOISELLE was bought for £100,000 after winning an Irish point in January and she has since joined the Dan Skelton yard. Skelton is always worth following at Wetherby with a 27% strike rate here since the start of the 2018/19 season, so it will be interesting to see whether this mare is well supported in the betting for what doesn’t look the strongest bumper.
