Paul Jacobs betting tips:
14.00 Naas – Adnaan
14.25 Carlisle – Getaway Luv
14.42 Exeter – Marty Byrde
15.52 Exeter – Copperhead
14.00 Naas – Adnaan
With 14 runners spread across the track for this all-aged six furlong handicap you would expect a gamble or two to unravel in the build up to this race. Several of these very much at home in the prevailing conditions. Gavin Cromwell’s Transcendental has been building up to winning a race of this nature with several fair runs on the sand at Dundalk, culminating with an eye catching fifth of 14 last month and his current mark of 78 looks fair. While the likes of course and distance winner Half Nutz and Shoebox King won’t mind the likely deep ground.
However, at a bigger price, Adnaan has the back form to run well off his current rating if ready to go after 140 days on the sidelines. A never nearer fifth of 22 in the 2021 Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury, the son of Ardad has only won one of his subsequent six races, a novice at Newmarket. However, it was his back end run here over five furlongs that makes him a tempting proposition here when he came from way off the pace, suffering interference, to finish 6th of 17 to Magical Vision, beaten less than two lengths.
14.25 Carlisle – Getaway Luv
It is the make-up of this race which pushed me into having a play with no less than five of the eight entries having made the running or raced as a presser on each of their last two starts. Of course jockeys taking part in such a clear cut set-up may well have a ‘natter’ beforehand to determine who will make the running, but several of these protagonists are normally very free in their races which may take that choice out of the respective jockeys’ hands.
Getaway Luv is the one confirmed hold-up horse in the field and despite his welter burden of 12 stone, he remains feasibly handicapped in this class two event after quickening up nicely to bridge a four length gap from the last fence at Ayr to see off Out On The Tear by half a length. Set to race from the same mark here under the in form Sean Quinlan, I think he can once again pounce close home here as the likely breakneck pace collapses as they climb up the testing home stretch at the Cumbrian track.

14.42 Exeter – Marty Byrde
All fans of the American series, Ozark, will be interested in John Flint’s runner Marty Byrd in this staying novices hurdle. Buckhorn Rocco undoubtedly brings the best form into the race when a three and a half length beaten favourite here behind Earth King over three furlongs less. His hurdling was pretty moderate that day and in the hope that they go a tad slower here over a longer stretch of ground, I think that the seven-year-old could be in the mix at the sharp end.
But the weather forecast of steady rain through the weekend should play to the strengths of the selection who simply couldn’t quicken up on good ground at Ascot last time out added to which following the race he was found to be lame on his left hind. That race was in any case tilting at the stars for the trainer and this looks a much more realistic option. His two runs on heavy ground have produced his best performances by some way in a six- race career and the extra yardage allied to the deeper ground here should see him to much better effect.
15.52 Exeter – Copperhead
I fancy that Quick Word is the forgotten horse in the Grand National betting and therefore many shrewdies for the Aintree spectacular will be expecting a big run from top weight Revels Hill here, under 10 lengths off the mare at Sandown in the London National. However, the 8lbs he is set to concede to Copperhead may just be beyond the eight-year-old.
Rated as high as 152 when going off a 12/1 shot in the 2020 ‘Hennessy’ at Newbury, the now nine-year-old tip has plummeted down to a mark of 127 following seven unplaced efforts. However, the Joe Tizzard trained charge has shown significant signs that he is set to come out of that slump having raced with much more enthusiasm on his last two starts at Wincanton.
I thought that he showed a lot more enthusiasm and had a renewed spring in his step when staying on steadily behind Steal A March at the back end of December over that sharp three miles and then a moderate pace back at the same track didn’t play to his strengths last month. This kind of test is made to measure for the selection and I fancy he can finally record a fourth chase success at the main expense of the unexposed Poppa Poutine and the unexposed top weight.
