Godolphin’s THROUGH THE AGES was green and had the run of the race against him when unable to justify strong support on his debut in a maiden at Newcastle earlier in the month, but it was still a very promising opening effort to finish second from this half-brother to connections’ Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Yibir. With improvement inevitable, he will take some stopping, with the extra furlong here another point in his favour. Maasai Mara still looks a work-in-progress but blinkers may help him, with the Andrew Balding newcomer Hampden Park another to consider.
WOODSTOCK has made a positive start to his career for Jack Channon, building on debut promise at Southwell when making short work of his rivals in a maiden at Chelmsford later in February, and he is taken to defy a penalty. A strong market move for the William Buick-ridden newcomer Tempered Soul, trained by George Boughey, would put a slightly different slant on things. The Archie Watson-trained Chriszoff is another debutant to keep a close eye on in the betting, while Noble Sovereign is open to progress after a decent first effort at this track last month.
BRAVE EMPEROR can boast a very good strike rate and is useful with it, so Archie Watson’s gelding looks the way to go in this valuable conditions race. He’s been first past the post in his last five starts, gaining his biggest win last time in France when blinkered for a listed contest at Cagnes-sur-Mer. Alzahir chases a hat-trick, he too having been on his travels last time with a win in Qatar, and is a big threat, while Coco Jack is slightly more exposed, winning four times in a busy juvenile campaign, but can usually be relied upon to give his running.
FIRST EMPEROR won twice earlier in the year, including over course and distance, and this consistent sort ran another good race over Kempton’s two miles when third to Duty of Care a week ago. As this doesn’t look a particularly strong race, he’s preferred to Military Two Step who was fourth to the selection here in January but who also arrives on the back of a solid showing when third at Wolverhampton last month. Diamond Bay wasn’t far behind First Emperor when fourth here last week and is also worthy of consideration.
Basement-grade fare for this sprint but JENEVER is less exposed than most in this company and can make a successful return to handicap company after showing improved form to land his first career success in a minor event at Southwell last time. Forever Dreaming found improvement for the application of blinkers when successful at the same track 15 days ago and is much respected despite his wide draw with Oisin Murphy maintaining the partnership, whilst Viewfromthestars arrives in decent heart and can complete the placings.
EARLY MORNING DEW remains a maiden but has run well when finishing runner-up on both starts since joining the Jim & Suzi Best yard, including at this track on his reappearance, and he wasn’t helped by the winner hanging across him when going down to One Step Beyond at Lingfield last time. He can build on those efforts to go one better this time around and get the better of Torbellino who is respected back down in grade after a good second over course and distance earlier in the month, with the consistent Golden Dove completing the shortlist.
