THAT’S DAY 3 DONE, FOLKS. BUT DON’T MISS MORE TOP TIPS FOR FRIDAY AT CHELTENHAM:

13:30 – Mighty Potter

I believe this year’s crop of novice chasers to be a strong group, with Gordon Elliott’s MIGHTY POTTER to be the top of that group. From the Drinmore at Fairyhouse to the Dublin Racing Festival (DRF) he has been extremely impressive this season and given his physique, that comes as little surprise to anyone. He jumps, he stays and he’s got the wow factor. I cannot look past Mighty Potter to get us off to a flyer.

14:10 – Maxxum

Has there ever been more runners talked up for one race? At each and every Cheltenham preview event, someone had confidence in a horse for the Pertemps. My idea of the winner is MAXXUM who has progressed into a proper stayer this season. He might have 11st12lbs to carry but the fact that connections have decided not to claim off him suggests they have confidence in his ability to concede weight all round. What he did at Leopardstown at Christmas was facile. He had no luck in running at the DRF. Let’s hope he has more luck this time around!

14:50 – Shishkin

The Ryanair Chase is often a race for “bankers”. From Allaho in recent years and now to former Supreme Novices’ and Arkle winner SHISHKIN. Yes, he let us down last year in the Champion Chase but he had valid excuses. This year is different. He looked back to near his best at Ascot last time and I have long believed that this horse needed to step up in distance. We know he’s the best horse in the race so let’s hope he shows us what he can do in what looks like his race to lose. Fury Road and Janadil (in that order) are my next best if anyone is looking beyond the favourite.

    15:30 – Teahupoo

A deep renewal of the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle which sees two former winners line up against some new kids on the block. Paisley Park and reigning dual champ Flooring Porter has been fantastic for connections and is sure to give another bold show under Danny Mullins but considering the rain that has fallen and his performances this season, my vote goes to TEAHUPOO. His Hatton’s Grace performance was top drawer and he proved that 3 miles wasn’t an issue at Gowran Park last time. He will be played late. The perfect partner for Davy Russell on the big day.

    16:10 – So Scottish

I don’t have a strong view on this year’s Plate, a wide open handicap that could go anywhere so I turn Emmet Mullins’ and JP McManus to find the key! SO SCOTTISH was just denied by Boothill at Ascot on his latest run but remains open to further progression for the team that produced The Shunter to win this in 2021. He’s unexposed and this has been his target.

    16:50 – Luccia

Irish trained horses have an incredible record in this race but I fear Nicky Henderson and a certain LUCCIA might stop the might of Mullins on this occasion. Despite carrying a 5lb penalty, this mare was considered for the Supreme against the geldings and if she really possesses that calibre of ability, then she will be very difficult to beat here.

    17:30 – Stumptown

STUMPTOWN has been my fancy for this race ever since he destroyed a good field at Sandown last month. With the benefit of Barry O’Neill and a workable mark of 135, I would be surprised if he didn’t make his presence felt in the Kim Muir.
