In the absence of Hardy Boy, the vote goes to Chives. He needs to bounce back from a disappointing effort at Ludlow, where he was pulled up, but he has been given a break by Nicky Henderson and his profile prior to that was a positive one. Chives won three of his four starts last term and made it four from five in handicaps when striking on his reappearance at Worcester. He remains on a handy mark if back in form.
14:15 – Twig
Twig was well beaten in the River Don Novices’ Hurdle at Doncaster last time but he was flying too high in Grade 2 company and can bounce back returned to calmer waters. He made the most of a good opportunity in a novice hurdle at Kempton on his penultimate outing, and ran to a higher level over fences earlier in the campaign, including when winning a novice handicap at Warwick in October.
14:50 – Under Control
Under Control made a winning start in a juvenile hurdle at Fontainebleau in December and what she showed there is the best form on offer. She has since been purchased by JP McManus and moved to Nicky Henderson so she stands out as the one to beat on her British debut.
15:25 – Herbiers
Herbiers, a useful sort over hurdles who won five times in that sphere, made no impact on his chasing debut at Doncaster, but he had an excuse (he was hampered at a key stage) and he took a step forward when runner-up at Kempton last month. Herbiers, who travelled fluently in a well-run two-and-a-quarter-mile handicap, looked the likely winner after being produced to lead two out, but he idled on the approach to the final fence and was collared close home. That showed he’s at least a good a chaser as hurdler and, with the Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero yard still in excellent order, he can get off the mark over fences.
Bothwell Bridge lost his way over fences after making a successful chasing debut at Sandown in December 2021, but he shaped with a bit more encouragement when fifth on his return to hurdling at Sandown last month, seeing things out well enough. He is on a potentially lenient mark and, with Sean O’Briain who has ridden a couple of winners in recent days taking off a handy 10 lb, he is worth siding with.
16:30 – Gallic Geordie
Gallic Geordie enjoyed a productive campaign last season, completing a hat-trick when successful over this course and distance in December 2021. He hasn’t won since, but he showed he’s still on a competitive mark when runner-up in the same event in December, finding only a bright prospect too strong. He is clearly effective over this course and distance and can gain a deserved success.
17:05 – Porter in the Park
Irish point winner Porter in the Park improved on her novice hurdle efforts when scoring on her handicap debut at Huntingdon in January, picking up well in a steadily-run race to win with more in hand than the half-length margin might suggest. She was unable to follow up under a penalty at Hereford last month but ran well in second behind an unexposed rival who has won twice since. Porter In The Park is clearly going the right way and looks well treated off just 2 lb higher.
