Bold Endeavour, a son of Fame And Glory, has climbed up the ratings in two runs for Nicky Henderson by jumping really well to win at Leicester and Doncaster. The win at Doncaster was all the more impressive as he has a tendency to jump to the right. I have no doubt he will be much better going this way around and he gets the nod. Kinondo Kwetu has done really well this season for Sam and Johnny England, winning six times in a row. That takes some doing and it’s a real feather in that small team’s cap.
Green Book, this son of Authorised, roared back to form with a good win at Sandown and even though he is badly off at the weights with Erne River, I am willing to take a punt on him as he will handle the conditions.
Phoenix Way ran a good race at Cheltenham last time. The handicapper has dropped him two pounds plus Lorcan Murtagh claims three off, which will help. He finished a good second at the track over the course and distance previously and he is proven around Ascot, having won over 2m5f last January and he races off the same mark here. Cap Du Nord is a worthy favourite and he won this time last year when winning at Kempton. There are lots of positives for him but just a fraction of doubt about the track makes me go with Phoenix Way.
I feel a bit mean deserting Bristol De Mai but Fontaine Collonges has run some good races recently plus is a winner on her only visit to Haydock which is a positive. The form looks strong too. She won when Venetia Williams’ horses were not performing well so I’m hoping that bodes well as Venetia’s horses are in much better shape now. I feel the key to this race will be the ground. I can see it drying out and that opens up the race to a surprise and First Lord De Cuet is definitely a player as an each-way punt. Conditions are suitable and that is not the case with a lot of these.
Toby Wynne is proving to be good value for his claim and this will help the strong traveller Homme Public. The race should set up perfectly for him and he is a very good value each-way bet in this contest.
Knappers Hill got the run of the race when winning at the track earlier in the year. I think all the jockeys will be aware of that and will be on his tail. James Bowen, who rides First Street, will be anyway! I like him and his form stacks up. He was second to State Man in the County Hurdle looks good now doesn’t it!
Anybody that knows me knows my association with the Nicky Henderson team and having seen Shishkin jump on Thursday, I am willing to stick with him. He looked sharper than he did earlier this season. He has had a wind operation and we all know he loves the track having beaten the Champion Chase winner Energumene in the Clarence House last season. The longer trip is perfect for him and I take him to bounce back to form. Fakir Doudairies is the obvious danger having won the race last year. The ground does not seem to be an issue with him as he has decent form on goodish ground.
