This uncompetitive opener provides RUSSIAN VIRTUE with an excellent chance to extend his winning spree. Something has clicked for Rebecca Menzies’ 6yo in recent weeks, and he could still be very well handicapped on the Flat. Rockabill Angel can provide a threat if today’s headgear switch enables her to replicate the form of last month’s Southwell second.
Handicap debutante Lady Bianca is much respected having shown progressive form in her first three starts, while Captain Dandy could pose a threat if he gets his starts sorted out. However, this looks a good opportunity for C&D winner MAGICDOLLAR to get his head back in front. He may find this is run more to suit him than when second in a slowly run contest back here last time.
Plenty of course form is on offer with five of the six runners having been successful here, four of them over this trip. Plastic Paddy should appreciate the return to 1m whilst the tough Asdaa is also respected following his encouraging effort at Kempton on Wednesday. However, it may be worth giving another chance to STAR SHIELD despite his modest effort here last time. He has dropped 1lb below his last winning mark and is 10lb lower than for the latest of his two wins over C&D. The unexposed Gifted Gold, whose handicap debut last time can be forgiven, is another to keep a close eye on.
Both Queen Regent and Reflective Star represent major yards and have shown enough to suggest they have the ability to win races, but the last two runnings of this contest have gone to a newcomer so it may be worth taking a chance with Charlie Johnston’s ALPINA EXPRESS. There is enough to like on the dam’s side of her pedigree, while her sire has a good record with his runners here.
Titan Rock would be a contender if taking another step forward now dropped in class, while Gobi Sunset is on a fair mark judged on his form this time last year. The market may prove informative as regards the unexposed Lion’s Dream on stable/handicap debut but the vote goes to ADEB (nap) who has done well since returning last month from a long absence and has been shaping as though well worth a go over this extra furlong.
A fairly competitive event that includes four last-time-out C&D winners. NICKLEBY may have more to offer in the retained visor and he’s first choice ahead of Show Compassion, who isn’t among the recent course scorers but looks interesting on her handicap debut. Final Account is the suggested third choice as he may improve further on AW for his new yard.
This drop to 0-55 level may well enable GUNNERSIDE to regain the winning thread off a reduced mark. Primo (second choice) and Elzaal are solid contenders on recent form, while last year’s one-two Nellie French and Joshua R are others to consider. A revival from Hot Diggity Dog looks possible too.
