The top-weight Excesso Velocidad put up a gutsy display on her racecourse debut when winning over 6f at this venue and didn’t run too badly when fourth last time. Carries a penalty on her third try around this venue and reverts to the 5f minimum again. The step back in trip is surely going to suit and it could be a massive evening for 10lb claimer Wayne Hassett who is looking for that breakthrough success under rules.
17:45 Southwell – Climate Change
Has slowly shown progression through each of his three life-time starts and now goes handicapping on what looks a very lenient mark of just 52. The step up in distance to 7f is sure to suit Climate Change as he has been getting outpaced momentarily down over sprint distances. The yard couldn’t be in any better form with a 50 per cent strike rate of late.

18:15 Southwell – Midnightattheoasis
Has been the subject of strong support the last few weeks, twice finishing second at Chelmsford and then making no mistake over this course and distance. The time of his victory wasn’t particularly strong, but Midnightattheoasis won without getting into top gear and he was still looking around at the finish. Granted natural improvement, I can see him taking a significant step forward.
19:00 Dundalk – Dubawi Spectre
Bumped into Auguste Rodin on his second try at Naas over 7 furlongs and his progression stalled a little afterwards. Was gelded prior to an excellent effort over the mile here at Dundalk last time and steps up in distance to 10f which looks sure to suit. Dubawi Spectre was a 410,000 guineas purchase and can finally get his foot on the first rung of the ladder.
19:15 Southwell – Johnny Boom
Is proving very adaptable for his third handler, winning over the extended mile, and also all the way up to 1m 4f. You had to be taken with his victory last time, and given his previous higher rating, Johnny Boom doesn’t look harshly treated carrying the penalty. Connections are having a cracking start to the season.
19:45 Southwell – Daafy
Ran really well from the back of the pack at this track, which is his normal style although the race was run at a very slow gallop. It didn’t play to his strengths at all and he did well to finish close up. Daafy is not hiding anything from the handicapper, but given a strong pace to run at, he is super consistent. Has drawn the inside stall in box 1, so can stick to the paint and take the shortest route around and finish with a rattle.
