Ruby Walsh: Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase
The Cheltenham Festival 2023 is just four weeks away and jump jockey icon turned tactical guru Ruby Walsh and top pundit Rory Delargy are with us every week to hopefully get you more bang for your buck.
The Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase is the penultimate race on Day 4 of this year’s Cheltenham Festival and Allegorie De Vassy is pushing Impervious hard for favouritism.
I thought Magic Daze was very good when winning at Naas on Saturday. Dinoblue is only a novice and Magic Daze a second-season novice, but she served it up to her. Dinoblue looked like rallying going to the last, but the closer they got to the winning post, the further Magic Daze was going away. I’d say Elimay’s going to be a lot better at the Festival but she’ll need to be. Elimay hadn’t run since Clonmel in November and I’d say she will improve for her run at the weekend. Two miles is too sharp for her now anyway. She’s gotten a bit older, she definitely wants further.

There’s a couple of good novices around this year.
My one concern for Allegorie De Vassy is that she has a tendency to jump to her right and she will need to jump considerably straighter than she did when winning at Thurles. She’s a fine, big mare a brilliant jumper of a fence and is unbeaten for trainer Willie Mullins.
Some think she’s too brave at her fences. I don’t. She’s able to get in close when she has to, her ability to jump doesn’t worry me – but the direction she jumps in is definitely a concern.
Dolcita has a squeak. I think it’ll be a solid race though, Pink Legend obviously won at the weekend in Exeter, you’ll have Scarlet And Dove chucked in there as well.
Galia Des Liteaux may well run in the Brown Advisory Plate. She has won at two miles at Bangor, three miles at Warwick. She is a mare that can vary in distance.
The Brown Advisory, to be fair, has probably seen better renewals so I can see why Galia Des Liteaux is an option there. If you look down the line though, you could have her for next year’s race as well with the novices that are coming on from next season. I think that’s a race that will get stronger.
There’s a case to be made for Jeremys Flame so it will be a very competitive race. I’d be more inclined to go with one of the novices, either Allegorie De Vassy or Impervious.
Going up in trip really suited Impervious at Punchestown, her jumping was better. Those couple of runs over two miles will stand to Impervious but when you watch her at Punchestown beating Journey With Me that extra half a mile really suited her. That will stand to her at Cheltenham too.
Verdict: I’m with Allegorie De Vassy.
Hopefully Paul Townend can get her down the inside rail and keep her jumping straight. It’s only the third edition of this race. It’s getting better and over time it will be a deeper race.
