13:28 – Afadil
All six runners in the Scottish Triumph Hurdle are winners and while the opposition may not have been up to much, AFADIL had any amount in hand on his Taunton hurdle debut last month for Paul Nicholls who has had success in this race in the past. An expensive purchase off the Flat where he was successful in France for the Aga Khan, Afadil looked a potentially smart hurdling recruit in winning hard held in a slowly-run race. Bringbackmemories won readily over course and distance on New Year’s Day and may give the selection most to do ahead of Fils de Roi.

Harry Derham has made a bright start to his training career with three winners last month and can win this handicap chase with FIDELIO VALLIS who used to be trained by his former boss Paul Nicholls. He ran up a quick four-timer in the spring of 2021 but was a bit disappointing on his last couple and the handicapper has given him a chance on his return from more than a year off. This does look competitive though, with the pair at the bottom of the weights Gold des Bois and Return Ticket heading the dangers after good placed efforts last time.
14:25 – Toothless
Just the five runners for this novices’ hurdle with exciting prospect TOOTHLESS looking the way to go after creating a highly favourable impression on his British debut when a most impressive winner of a maiden hurdle at Fakenham last month. Jumping and travelling with bags of zest, he sprinted clear to win by 35 lengths in the end. Carcaci Castle has won both starts in this sphere since joining Sandy Thomson so should ensure Paul Nicholls’ runner doesn’t get things all his own way. Dancila, who had useful form on the Flat, is an interesting newcomer for Fergal O’Brien and worth a market check.
14:55 – Abuffalosoldier
Some Irish raiders are bidding to book their place at Cheltenham in this Pertemps Qualifier but ABUFFALOSOLDIER has made a fine start to his handicap career for Warren Greatrex and his lightly-raced profile provides the hope for better still so he’s the suggestion. He looked well suited by the step up to three miles when winning at Newbury in November and has run creditably since when third at Cheltenham. Wakool is another to have thrived since stepping up in trip and can fill the runner-up spot in this contest for the second year in succession. Salvino and Shearer complete the shortlist.

Top weight LIMERICK LEADER shaped well when third to Arthur’s Quay, who has since completed his hat-trick, on his recent chasing bow here over two miles and is fancied to open his account now that his stamina is drawn out more. Course-and-distance winner Large Action rates the chief threat if, as expected, bouncing back from a below-par Sedgefield showing last time out. Dr Shirocco and Irish raider Nabraska at the foot of the weights appeal as the duo best equipped to fight it out for minor honours.
15:55 – Duke Of Deception
DUKE OF DECEPTION would surely have won had he not been committed for home further out than ideal when a close second in a conditional jockeys’ race at Kelso three weeks ago. That was only his second start over fences and he can gain compensation here in receipt of plenty of weight from more exposed rivals. Creative Control, first and second over course-and-distance on his last couple of starts, is a solid alternative.
16:25 – I Am Gonna Be
Michael Scudamore’s I AM GONNA BE was the ready winner of a mares’ maiden at Newcastle in November and she’s fancied to follow up making her handicap debut under top weight. She’s preferred to the in-form Garde des Champs who’s still seeking a first win but went close to landing a gamble at Doncaster last time. Zafar, a winner here around this time last year, is another one to consider after running third in a better-grade handicap here on his latest start.
