I was really impressed by the way Freddie Robinson travelled and then readily pulled clear over course and distance last time out. Running green on the run in, he has more in his locker and is one of four entries that race rather free and are going to make sure this no crawl. Afadil could be anything, but needs to jump better at speed so the vote goes to Rebecca Menzies’ runner who is a bit easier to settle and was far from disgraced behind Comfort Zone in the Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow in December.
Gaillard Du Mesnil finally got off the mark over fences at the seventh time of asking over three miles, only really asserting at the last when his stamina came into play. This is obviously a step up and back down in trip he looks no value at a short price despite being the most obvious winner. To my eyes Mighty Potter has merely been workmanlike in two wins and the vote goes to the Daryl Jacob mount James Du Berlais who simply galloped his rivals into submission first time up and looks an exciting prospect if he can be kept sound.
Another event where there is sure to plenty of pace on and that will suit the running style of top weight Friend or Foe (will also appreciate the drying ground) and the selection. Return Ticket and Dreams of Home are closely locked up on Kelso form, but Hasankey gets the vote if regular rider Lewis Dobb can drop him out and then use his sound jumping to gradually get him into the contest.
2.10 – Leopardstown – BLUE LORD
It’s quite simple, if the selection replicates his classy success over course and distance last time out then Blue Lord is very difficult to oppose. Even though I hate tipping up short-priced favs I see no alternative. A clear-cut success could see him become the new fav for the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham.
2.25 – Musselburgh – TOOTHLESS
General Officer has led on three of his four starts and could very well take all the beating from the front, but I am hoping that the Paul Nicholls’ charge Toothless can pick him up close home. Once he got into a rhythm at Fakenham he used his stride to good effect and I suspect that there is a lot more in the tank from this son of Derby winner Authorized.
2.40 – Leopardstown – VANILLIER
Winner of this race in 2020 off a 3lbs lower mark, Glamorgan Duke showed a bit more sparkle last time out and along with the likes of last year’s winner Birchdale (2lbs higher mark) and likely favourite, Indigo Breeze, he is respected at a price.
But this could finally be the turn of the Gavin Cromwell charge Vaniller. He has always been highly tried in his career and this is a succinct drop in grade from running behind the likes Fury Road and Galopin des Champs in his last two starts and a double figure price will suffice.

3.10 – Leopardstown – VAUBAN
If I had told you 364 days ago that Honeysuckle would be the best part of 2/1 to defend her Irish Champion Hurdle crown then you would have had me locked up, but following her Hatton’s Grace defeat and the fact that she is now a nine-year-old there it is logical to believe she is on the downgrade. I fancy that the selection will reverse Matheson Hurdle form with Slate Man now that he is fully 100% race fit. The last named had the run of the race that day and a mistake at the fourth seemed to make Vauban guess a wee bit at the next. I think it will be plenty closer this time against the great mare.
3.40 – Leopardstown – FACILE VEGA
Willie Mullins will be quite happy that there are at least two other runners in the field that are likely to set a decent pace, and in particular High Definition. That will hopefully allow Facile Vega to settle better and jump cleaner after which his superior engine and staying power should ensure he goes to the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham as the odds-on favourite.
